Have you guys seen the recent Roundel? There's a person asking if his M5 should have 5-30 put in. The response was that even though the recommended oil is 5-30 the editor would put 10-60 in because the s62 is basically a detuned race engine.
I don't necessarily want to start an oil debate but I've been putting 5-30 in mine because that's what the sticker under the hood indicates.

mike miller, the tech editor of roundel, is not a believer in thin oils. He is generally old school, 'not a decent bmw since the e30, we're all going to hell with i drive, uses redline oil in everything', etc. gotta take what he says with a grain of salt.
I'm on the fence, personally. Generally use tws in the warmer weather, and 5w30 in cold weather. My used oil analyses looked pretty darn good with tws, better than with 5w30 (but not better than with mobil 1 0w40, not worse either), so i'll probably stick with that from hear on out, but my car is getting up there in milage.

oil viscosity has nothing to do with a detune engine or old school opinions about oil because is all about hot & cold engine tolerences and climate and conditions the motor is run at
personally I use Mobil1 0w40 in winter and 15w50 or Tws 10w60 in hot weather
Here's my 2 cents... I have used Mobil1 since day 1...5w30...as prescribed...just sent my Dyson oil test to Terry....never had an issue....oil burning...nothing to note.... NOW as of 1 week ago I put in Castrol Syn. 10w60 as per the New BMW Specs...talk to me in 3k miles and we shall see...because Terry will get another oil test. Regards "M" BTW I agree on the statements made about Miller....I ilke his tips but he is DEF. pre 2000 BMW's... ...I think he feels they are completely over engineered.

+1 on this. I use Mobil1 0w40 all year round because I don't run my car hard for long distances (don't track the car). This oil is best for winter cold and cold starts.
If you routinely hammer your car during the heat of the summer then go to 10w60 for the summer. Mobil1 0w40 will give you the best start-up protection all year long, but might leave you short on protection in the heat of the summer depending on how you drive and where you live. If I were driving on the Autobaun at 100+ MPH for a few hundred miles with the AC on, I would want 10w60 in my car; but I don't do that. I can't afford another ticket!
It gets hot and hotter than hell in FL. I use TWS year round. Either way, it flows like a 10 weight in the cold and a 60 when hot. Unless it gets below 10F, there is nothing to worry about. (Disregard the last part, anyone who lives where it snows).
