so...when it comes down to it, ews is pretty much worthless unless theives are clueless on what they are doing. meaning, ews just makes our lives complicated...

i had to tow my car once because an aftermarket software vendor did not properly align ews. of course the vendor insisted that i put my key in the ignition while ecu was out and i insisted on how there was no chance of that since i put the key away until i put ecu back on. at the end of the day, i incurred tow fee as well as ews alignment fee.

EWS is a theft deterrent, as is an alarm. There is nothing theft-proof.

Having just fitted a 2001 M5 engine into a 1995 M5 I know ALL about EWS/DME alligning and how to get around the factory system

Unfortunately these cars are a lot easier to steal than most people think with the right parts. I'm not posting details on the board for obvious reasons but if you want to know how to run your car without a key then PM me and I can give you more details

But I have to say that if I had an E39 M5, no way would I bypass what is after all a great security device for all but the most dedicated thieves. If someone wants your car then they will get it, regardless of what anti-theft measures you have, but the EWS eliminates all but the most determined attempts

His car intermittently wont start because of the ews.
It'll run for a month then it'll stop starting and cycling the key 200 times will make it work for a month.
He tried giving the ews different voltages lol but no go

putting the key up against the ews module is not going to work. the pickup for the key signal is the ring antenna which is around the lock cylinder.
