I did take it in, and the dealer service rep says it's nothing to worry about. He asked if I seem to be losing oil unduly, or dripping any on the ground - no to both. He just said to keep an eye on it. Didn't seem too worried.
In answer to the questions - the cap is on, and it's obviously oil. There is no way it could be trans fluid, unless anyone can think of a way a patch of trans fluid surrounded by dryness could appear on the very top of the engine.
