MK4 Nav won't read DVDs but will read CDs

Hi,

I've been having problems with my MK4 unit for a couple of months. It won't read the disc / re-boots itself / stereo cuts out. I finally managed to borrow someone's 2004-2 CD and everything works perfectly. So naturally I thought it must be my 06-1 DVD (I've tried copying it but that wouldn't work either) so I bought an 07-1 DVD. Before getting that I upgraded it to V28 using a CD-RW and that worked fine. Got the 07-1 disc today, put it in and it read it. Woohoo I thought. Started to use it and it's the unit's doing the same thing now as it was before.

Anyone else had a MK4 that would only read CDs and not DVDs? It was working perfectly until around six weeks ago. I took the unit out and squirted one of those high pressure aerosol cleaners into, it but obviously to no avail.

Thanks!

Are you using the correct DVD? It should be the HIGH, not Professional.

Not at all unusual. Copies always have minor flaws in the DVD that the simple DVD drive cannot tolerate. It will hang up then display a message (Like 'insert DVD/CD')

These drives are not very fault tolerant- I've head that cleaning the lense will help, but this requires SIGNIFICANT dissassembly and skill.

Heat kills these drives. I am on my 4th... all under warranty!

You might try a different Map DVD. If you bought it from a business, you might ask for an exchange...that might be a quick fix. SInce you already bought one, if you PM me, perhaps I could help you out with a loaner.

Thanks for all the replies. All of my DVDs are originals apart from when I copied the 06-1 to see if that would work but it didn't. Yes, they're HIGH versions. Note again that this all used to work up until a few weeks ago. I've come to the conclusion that the drive is knackered and I'm going to have to buy another one. I've only had this one 12 months

Ard, I remember when we tried your disc in the NAV unit I have in my car, I'm waiting to get my car back from the body shop so I can take it to Archille(David) who has an OEM disc. If this doesn't work I guess I'm up shizz creek? Or does the dealer repair these things? Is this under warranty?

I bought a unit from Ebay (Ana Cernys from Lithuania) which arrived with a drive that would not read DVD's. I tried all permutations of backups, originals, etc. to no avail. Finally I just gave up and settled on using CD versions since I bought the MK4 for the speed anyway.

However, I did try to repair it, and did quite a bit of research. I discovered that these units were manufactured by Siemens, and that Audiovox had a similar system out a few years back. So I tracked down Siemens and asked if I could purchase a new drive module (if you take the MK4 apart, you'll see what I mean). After numerous calls to a product manager, he finally broke down and said he would send me one. Hot air, though, never happened.

So now, I just continue to use the CD's.

I do feel your pain, however. It seems like these drives do have a pretty high failure rate.

Dog.. you dog!

You changed usernames? Ah, now it clicks.

Dealer will not repair.

An electronics shop that words on CDs, DVD players can pop it apart and give it a tune up. Clean out the interior, carefully clean the laser lens with an appropriate electroncis solvent (residue free)... maybe $50? Worth a shot.

I got a CD cleaning disk long ago - haven't used it for quite a while - but it has a little strip of brush attached to the CD radially. You put a drop of the cleaning fluid on, then put the CD in the player and it supposedly cleans the lens. It is a Discwasher product. You can do a search on "Discwasher" and find it on the web. Not sure if there are any hazards in using it.

Obviously a lot easier than disassembly to clean the lens, assuming it really works.
