My '00 came with a SSK, origin unknown.

Very tight 1-2-3-4 H pattern; 5-6 are way over to the right. Quite notchy, recalcitrant when transmission's cold. In any gear, there's about 1" side-to-side play. Sound like any particular brand?

Not complaining, really; technician looked at it during a brake job and didn't see any problems. It and the SS exhaust give the car more immediacy.

Sounds like a walmart special. You might want to look at fresh tranny fluid, some favour royal purple, others just replenish the lifetime (?) OEM fluid. Might be an opportunity to fit another SSK eg Rogue, UUC, Z4M or go stock.

Tend to agree on the Walmart lineage. I could guess a brand, not one of the good ones you mentioned. Also agree it's time for a trans fluid changeout.

Can you get some pictures... under the shift boot and from under the car??

Good idea on a picture. The driveshaft carrier bearing needs replacement; I'll get a pic when the car's on a lift, hopefully within a couple of weeks. The one time I looked at the shifter on a lift, it seemed pretty flimsy.

LFC09 - So they have Walmarts in Australia, too? Damn, can't get away from 'em, no matter how far you go.

I just read "The Wal-Mart Effect" last week. Damned good book.

I'll never shop at a Wal-Mart again (I only go once a year, maybe twice, and then just for 5qt. jugs of Mobil1 for the M Coupe, but now I use BMW 5w-30 synthetic).

Nope, no Walmarts here. I had my brush with em whilst driving 19000m around the States for 6mo in 1996.
