Newbie Here - I love your M5's
Hey all:
I am a newbie to the whole BMW M series thing, but I love my new M3! I am considering getting an M5 because I like the whole 4-door sleeper aspect of your cars. I was wondering how much aftermarket engine mods are available for the '01 M5 and M3's? Is there a supercharger or turbo kit for the cars? Just curious, how many of you have modded your cars?
Thanks
Daniel

Daniel,
Nice collection of cars you got. As far as I know, there are a lot of major engine mods in the works tight now. RMS and Dinan are both working on that superchargers I think. Check out Racing Dynamics, Kelleners, Hartge, AC Schnitzer, Hamann.. basically all of these companies have a lot of cool stuff for the M5.

Check out http://www.dinanbmw.com/
They have mods and some BMW Service Centers will be able to do the install (i.e., you don't have to go to Mountain View, CA).
Do a search on the board for Dinan--there are a lot of threads on the subject. From what I've seen (and I haven't done this yet), the Stage III and the 3.45 differential are the two mods that have the most impact on the actual performance. The chip, the cold air intake and the exhaust, less so, but add to the effect.

Try the nowack n-500 , it's not a turbo or supercharger , but yeah 500hp. G-power ( www.g-power.de) has a kompressor for E46 M3. They claim 460 hp , i wonder what feeling it is to drive it by porsches , weak ferraris, corvettes, amg-mercs , s-audis, M5 (oh no not that )

Why would you bother to add more HP to the M5? I can't see the point, to be honest: It has plenty of power for donuts and other hooligan activities, and very few people can even come close to mastering the 400bhp that it does have. You also have other cars (like the 360) to use that are more fun, and the supercharger would clearly upset the one of the critical aspects of the M5 being a "daily driver:" Dependability. I'm also sure that BMW will void your warranty in the event of trouble---but that is more of a financial consideration, so it might not be a big deal in your case.

I have to agree with kgk.
The car doesn't need tweeking in the engine department.
Maybe a little fine tuning on the suspension. But even this is debatable.
The car is as close to being a perfect sedan as one can get.
Of course everyone has his thing. People ask me why I would ever but a Ford engine in an XKE.
Its a long story.

And although it doesn't appear to be a big issue for you, improved engine performance won't come cheap. The headers are a bit restrictive, making all other breathing mods (CAI, exhaust) less than exciting. The engine management software was written by the same guys who write it for BMW's F1 team - there isn't much to be had from a chip either. So if you want more than, say, 10hp increase, plan to spend MANY thousands of $$ on stuff that is STILL, after nearly 2 years, in development.
