How does this sound

Short of Navigation improvements, and minor cosmetics, is there any reason why I should be dissuaded from picking up a one owner 2000 model with 30,000 miles for $27000 over any of the later model cars for 8-10k more? The 2000 is my color preference, but I keep falling into the trap of "the newer car has this improvement..."

Thanks again for all the feedback.

The early 2000 cars had a different ring design and VANOS issues. Many received the VANOS pressure accumulator upgrade, so you should check. Rings were changed with a builddate of 3/2000 or 4/2000- check with a search here. Many with the old rings ran fine, and many with the new rings eat oil- no guarantee.

For me, the widescreen display and upgraded lights would be were I draw the line... I could add a DVD nav if I wanted. My personal two cents.

I owned the a 2000 M5 for two years and enjoyed it, but I always had Angel eye, wide Nav, Vanos improvement envy. I am very happy with my 2003 suede headliner and other improvements.

If you're on a budget, then grab that one owner 2000 model with 30K miles. Sounds like a great buy, and you get the colors you want as well.

Changes from 2000 were only cosmetic. Yes, piston ring design was changes in post 3/00. No M5 is immune to VANOS issues

+1 and also executive/premium interior and luxury package is what the 2k model had as a standard or no cost option...
