The hub diameter is also important. the e39 has a larger hub than most other BMWs.
The offset on the e39 is 20mm, the offset for the 3 series cars is somewhere near 40mm , depending on which model and year. So I would imagine you would need spacers to make these work on your car. I guess you could also deal with the hub diameter difference with the spacers, but I'd pass on these and look for a set that would fit the car properly.

I know im missing something but cant remember what it is ...
Your hub centerbore is 1.6mm larger than the centerbore of these wheels. Even if the offset was correct (which it's not) the wheels simply won't fit onto the hubs of your E39.
At one time, Rogue Engineering had spacer/adapters that could allow you to run these wheels. However, I don't know if they still make these. You could contact them at (201)444-8150 and ask Ben or Mark if they still exist.

In addition to the center bore being wrong (72.5 mm vs correct 74.1 mm E39 fitment), tyres are incorrect sizes.
