Guesses for the most part but....

Seats - likely.

Steering wheel - yes but the air bag is different and costly. The install is also costly from what I've read.

Guage cluster - yes, easy but the M5 specific features won't work (oil temp, tach lights)

Search for the threads on 540i upgrades. The looong thread covering 540i wagon upgrades covered lots of this (gauges for sure).

About the steering wheel... It comes w/ the airbag already (does that make a difference) What is the costly part???

The biggest thing for me is the seats, as I get no support from mine...

Seats ---- yes if you can work out the wiring issue

steering wheel ---- depends on what year is your 540i.....pre-99 and i don't think you can use any M5 wheel...after 99 i guess that is straight plug-n-play since after 99 all E39 use the same stage 2 airbag system and you should be fine....install isn't anything costly....check out those DIY site and you should have any idea

Seats ---- maybe go for Recaro manual sportline like i do ?? it save some pretty good weight compare to the OEM elec. seats

on a 97, you have a single stage airbag, so the M5 wheel and air bag will not work. I did a sport wheel swap on my previous 98 528, bmw does make a sport wheel for single stage airbag cars. It looks like the 00 wheel, but the rim is not as fat. This makes me wonder if you could get an 00 wheel, and find the 'correct' early single stage airbag. I believe bmwtips.com has the part numbers for the various steering wheels. I have my 00 wheel and airbag sitting on a shelf in my garage if you want to experiment.

Buying new, both the wheel and airbag are similar cost, when i did my 528, it was about 800 for the combo.,

There was also a wiring harness change for the seats somewhere between 98 and 02. When we were trading in my wifes 02 525iT, i tried to swap her sports seats into my 528, but the harnesses were different, and i didn't want to go cutting wires the night before the trade in (it was a last minute thought, what can i pirate off the trade).
