Oil Change - Mityvac 7201 Review

Hi,

First a little background. I have always viewed the oil extractor pumps with negative eyes. There was something unsettling about not draining the oil through the pan (like nature always intended). But, after reading post after post I started to question my thinking. Several weeks ago I decided to search the net and try to come to a definitive conclusion about changing oil using the pump instead of draining it below. I came across several articles that explained how the viscosity of oil prevented any sludge or solid particles from accumulating in the bottom of the oil pan. This meant that extracting oil through the dip stick was just as efficient as draining it the old fashion way.

Having made up my mind I searched the different oil extractors on the market today and chose the Mityvac 7201.
http://www.amazon.com/Mityvac-7201-F...8&s=automotive

I selected it based on the following criteria:
1. Large capacity
2. Positive reviews
3. The ability to suction and dispense fluid with a flip of a single switch
4. Price

Today I performed my first oil change using this extractor. First, when using any extractor make sure you loosen the oil filter first. This makes sure that ALL of the oil is drained into the oil pan for extraction. Otherwise, you'll be sucking the oil twice.

Using this extractor/pump is very simple. Attach the dip stick hose and insert it until it stops. Pump the handle 10 times, sit back, and let the extractor do it's job. A couple of pumps during the sucking kept everything flowing.

After 5 minutes you will start to hear the pump suck air which means you are done. Let the air push the oil through the tube into the collector and pull the tube out.

Now, this is what I really like about the 7201, over the weekend I bought a new oil transport container (http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1289081&cp=&pg=3&fbn=Taxonomy%7CAutomotive&f=Taxonomy%2FACE%2F1254883&fbc=1&kw=oil&parentPage=search&searchId=19168148601). I simply unscrewed it, put the hose into the container, switched the pump from suction to dispense, and the oil began to flow from the extractor into the oil transport container.

While the container was getting filled I replaced the oil filter and put in fresh Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic.

Once the container was full, I shut everything off, wiped down the hoses and put the extractor away. BTW, I also filled a sample bottle for the Blackstone oil analysis which the extractor/dispenser made very easy and ensured no spillage.

Overall, I highly recommend this product to anyone who does their own oil changes. It makes the whole process easy, simple, and safe (since you do not need to crawl under the car).

This product get a two thumbs up.

I'm fixing to do my 2nd change with the 7201, but it's still full from the first time. It was extremely easy to use, once I tightened all the bolts on the lid. I had a small air leak which made it extremely difficult to get proper suction. Once I figured that out and tightened the nuts up, it was smooth going.

I need to pick up one of those oil transport containers so I can bring it over to the auto parts store and dump it. I don't like the idea of having the Mityvac sitting in the passenger sit and driving. Too easy to tip over.

I started using a topside extractor in '02 just after taking delivery of an M3. To test, I sucked all the oil out with the MityVac and then dropped the sump plug. After waiting 10 minutes or so, a total of 2 drops of oil came out, so I haven't touched a sump plug on my car or any family members.

It works so well and is so clean that I don't even bother getting changed into car tinkering clothes any more!
