After researching Tire Rack it seems that the RE050A Pole Position is the absolute monster tire for our cars. They do not however offer a 275/35/18. Do I try the 285? The specs say that they will work on 9.5" rims. Do you ever even think of the 265??? Any experience on modding factory sizes?

Ex-mod Queen, now back to Stock!
I put on the 285-30-18 in the rear last month but I have OZ's superleggeras 10.5x18 no rubbing issues, excelent tire though in my opinion much better than the PS2 it replased also I got the fronts on sale from tire rack stock size for $155
I would be cautious with the RE050As in the wet. The RFT version in the 650i sucks in the rain compared to the Goodyear F1 GSD3. A bit of throttle on an on ramp in the rain caused the 650i to fish tail badly even with DSC on. Dry, they grip quite well but break away in a drift.

There are currently many variants of the RE050's on vehicles..
The RE050 was the original
The RE050A was an OEM tire for many vehicles as well as a popular aftermarket tire but has its limitations, such as wear and wet weather traction even a hefty dose of Bridgestone tech. Due to this reason, the RE050A was redesigned and reintroduced as the RE050 Pole Position.
The RE050A P.P's are a much improved version of the RE050 and provide real world wet/dry traction while improving on the wear and noise and harshness that they were known for in the previous versions. A darn good tire!
The RE050A also comes in RFT (run flat) variants as well which were included on the likes of Z4's with sport packages. You can read up on how these werent the best tires as they were notoriously sharp in impact resistance.
I am unsure if the RE050A P.P's have been reintroduced with a RFT variant.
As for the 275/285 debate. The 285s will be find.

I never came close to fish tailing with the PS2s or Goodyear F1s on the M5. It may have been the limited slip or the more confining DSC but even when pushing hard on the track in the rain (with DSC on), the worst it did was skip out just a bit but maintain the same line. The incident in the 650i was only moderate throttle, virtually a straight line, a snap reaction, and totally unexepected how easily it broke loose. Thank goodness DSC was on but it (and I) must have over corrected to cause the fish tailing.
SC'd, thanks for the info. The OEM tires on the 650i sport package are Potenza RE050A RFT, no mention of Pole Position on the side wall. Per Tire Rack, there is an RE050A II RFT but it's not a Pole Position nor does it come in sizes needed for the 650i. The Tire Rack reviews of the Pole Position are much better than the RE050As.
