Looking to buy M5, Questions

Hello everyone,
I have a few questions for you all. I traded in my 02 M3 with 80K on it a few months ago and bought an Mits EVO 9. While the 9 is a great performance car I cant take the tin can feel and the lack of lux. So I am considering an M5. My budget is 30K or less. He is the question: Buy a low mileage 2000 model or from what I understand the 02's and up have updates to trans and other problems but I can only afford one with miles on the clock. Its true it comes down to who's owned the car so I will have a pre inspection but I am curious what direction others would decide. I will do some more searching for common defects among the years first.
Also how much faster does an M5 compare to an 02 M3 6sp? Looking for that perfect balance between lux, looks, and power. I think the M5 beats them all. Thanks, Jon

It does. No special issues with the '00 MYs, other than a few cosmetic updates. The only notable technical difference was an earlier ring design that was revised 2Q'00 to help reduce the known oil consumption tendencies of the S62. Do your homework on candidate cars, and the money you save with an '00 will likely enable you to upgrade the cosmetics (especially the headlights) and still come out ahead. There is a wealth of info on this board on this subject.. check out the search feature.

Good luck,
Dave

For model year differences, take a look here:http://www.bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=18. Generally pick a well maintained car over a newer car. Miles are a consideration, but not a concen. Proper care and feeding of the beast is important.

Keep an eye on the For Sale section, you see a lot of nice cars here.

As to performance, stock for stock the M5 and M3 are close. M5 has more torque and more top end, M3 more nimble and tossable.
Regards,
Jerry

There have been a few M5's FS for less than $30K, but to get a well maintained/issue free one, you'll probably have to pay a little more.

BMWLVR... Wait until you can afford the M5 you want, and get the color / options you want. I owned a 2000 M5 for 2 years and loved the car. I had the normal Vanos, MAF issues and some other hick-ups in the car - whining drive train, but all of those issues because the previous 2 owners of my Cop'd Carbon Black M5 drove it hard. I drove it hard as well.

I now have a 2003 M5 that was well maintained by a single 3 year lease owner and its has normal mileage and use. I love the car and I'm having no issues with my CPO'd Sterling Grey M5.

Yes, it all depends on how well the previous owner took care of the car. Prices are drifting downward for all year models. I love the V8 and I'm not interested in the straight 6 (M3) as long as a V8 is available.
