Adventures with Headlight Adjusters

I was fed up with my left headlight pointing at the ground so after reading the instructions here:
http://www.blueheronkayaks.com/bmw/adjusters.pdf

What I used:
-3/4 inch plastic (kitchen cutting board type material from TAP plastics in Bellevue)
-1x 2 1/2" SS 10-24 machine screw (Ace Hardware)
-2x #10 acorn nuts (Ace)
-Coping saw - to cut plastic
-Dremmel + cutting wheel - to shape plasitc, fine cutting work
-Drill with 11/16" bit
-flat screwdrivers
-heat gun
-8mm, 10mm sockets
-torx drivers
Total in parts was about 5 bucks.

Notes beyond the above instructions:
1) It's not important to be very precise with your pieces. Dremmel can do it all!
2) Try and shorten and totally round down the acorn nuts. I wasn't able to with the tools I had on hand so the ball and socket joint fit is not good and the nut may pop out of the socket. (Something I may have to revisit in the future )
3) Reattach the leveling unit ball joint BEFORE putting the black inner frame back on. (Don't be stupid like me and have everything back together only to realize it's near impossible to get the leveling unit joint back together.)
4) Having compressed air to blow out the housing and lenses is really helpful
5) the adjusters are much bigger than I had visualized looking at pictures - see razor blade for reference

Here are some pictures to supplement the instructions above.
Took me somewhere in the 4-5 hour range but would have been faster if 1) I had more/better power tools 2) I didn't have to disassemble for the second time.

I initally tried to do this without taking the lights apart but found it impossible to access the vertical aim adjuster.

Hope someone else can benefit from my pain...

BTW it's nice to be able to see more than 15 feet infront of the car!

Congrats. I went through a similar chore on my 2000 M5 a little while back, but had the luxury of lenses which came off easily, and a pack of new adjusters from the dealership. Couple of scary moments with the vertical adjuster ball joint ........ !

nice ambitious job! i always found that working on my cars and motorcyles was *the* best reason/excuse to run out and buy new tools.

even the ministry of war & finance can't begrudge you running out to get them when your vehicle is in various staes of disassembly and you "need" a tool to do the job right...

Can you buy the regular adjuster from BMW if it is broken? I broke mine and I just want to relpace it with the OEM piece.

Yes, you can, so long as you have pre-2001 'non angel eyes' headlights.

Look on www.realoem.com for the part number

Cheers !

You can buy METAL adjusters from one of our sponsors, I plan on buying the metal ones that way I know they'll never break again.

Just a thought.

I also found delrin ones for sale in the US by http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/bmw.html but I'd rather not spend 80+ bucks PER side when the pieces can be made for less than 5 bucks.

Now if the replacement pieces were closer to 20 bucks per side then it would be a no brainer.
