Is there a company out there that does a touch screen for the e39??

They would make a killing i know i would buy onelovelove

Ideally to swap out and replace the original screen. Already got the Alpine system which is better functionally, but would not ruin the car for it

Just wondering??

Still doesnt look very OE, Id get a 6.5 inch with the same resolution and swap out the screen and keep the frame. You would also need to get software because BMW's cant take touch input.
True not entirely OE, but with the touch screen the buttons and dials on the frame would be useless and for show only. Robar did the touchscreen upgrade and I upgraded my nav from MKIII to MKIV... I should have gone the touchscreen route. More expensive but by far way better functionality and I've seen it in person looks great. I'll pm Robar and see if he would post some details.

If you are going touch screen I would have thought you would have to run a carputer as well, those screen shots show a touch screen connected up to a carput!

As Bobbis said the OE BMW system has no way of knowing what to do with a touch screen so it's not strictly as easy as plonking a touchscreen in place of the old one, tis FAR more expensive!!!

I had a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 unit with the XM Nav Traffic, IPod interface, and bluetooth module installed last year. There are more options available from Pioneer to go with this unit (i.e. DVD changer, surround sound processor,...). The AVIC-Z1 might be the best aftermarket unit available today, I'm very happy with its performance. If in SoCal, I can recommend a good installation shop but it's not going to be cheap.

Thanks for the pics and info..great looking upgrade! My teenager has a touch screen nav/audio in his car and it is so much more functional in every way than his old man's car:crying2:

The aftermarket touchscreens are definitely more functional, but the look is all wrong. Also, I’m not particularly impressed by alpine or pioneer’s approach to the in car OS so I would probably put a whole computer behind it(with a switch to toggle between the OE and aftermarket of course).

I have seen Thaichi's new touch screen navi and i was really impress with it...the only draw back i can think is you'll loose the functionality of checking your Miles per gallon etc on the new touch screen but you can check below the speedo...overall touchscreen get my vote...

Touch Screen Installation

I got fed up with my antiquated (2001 build) nav system, lack of good iPod integration, poor Sat radio integration, no HD radio, etc. So, I had all the audio/nav systems (including old TDMA phone & voice recognition) yanked out and installed an Alpine Touch Screen. This is fed by an Alpine Vehicle Hub Pro which functions like a server. You can attach different modules and everything is controlled by the touch screen or a little hand controller installed in the compartment in the armrest. Everything is in the trunk, including the iPod, with the excepton of a DVD/CD player mounted in the glove box. Besides playing DVD's, I can slip in single CD's without having to access the changer in the trunk. I even have full use of my steering wheel controls to control all the audio functions! This is what I have now:

HD Radio
Sirius Satellite Radio
Full iPod control (all iPod functions are displayed and controlled on touch screen)
DVD Player (mounted in glove box. Also plays CD's, mp3 disks, etc.)
6-CD changer
Alpine DVD Nav system (voice activated with traffic advisory)
Bluetooth integration (waiting on replacement module)

All the work was done by Technik1 on 29th Street in Manhattan. (Technik1.com --I think). And the installation is 1st class. While I was at it, the front door speakers were replaced with Focal Be speakers driven by an Audison amp. The Alpine unit drives the rear doors and the BMW subwoofers (the BMW subwoofer amps are bypassed). The sound is GORGEOUS and is the only thing that can compete with the sound of the engine. Some pics are attached.

Dan, THAT is a nice looking install. Would like to see it in a black interior car, I think it would be almost seamless, factory looking.

How reasonable is this idea?
Using the stock face to hook up to a PC of some sort, getting a touchscreen to put in there, programming cusotm buttons, mouse, etc. That way youd get a full factory look, and could tie in diagnostic software and all sorts of thigs like that into it?
Just a thought..

Robar - How much was it all inclusive? PM me if you want. I assume it's a local OC shop?

Wow:eek:oohhh:

some stunning ideas there and like jag120`s lots

Would expect to spend about 6k for an install of that quality and cant bring myself to part with that much on what is already a good system.

Was hoping a direct replacement with the existing kit, wishing more like.:lightbulb: :lightbulb:

One of you sponsors must be doing it, nav2go etc etc

I ordered my http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834220083 Asus R2H and already have interface to iBUS using CarX. Once it gets here I'll go to a pro shop to help me with setting up audio and power. Also have on order AutoEnginuity Enhanced ScanTool, so I'll have OBDII intergrated into my carputer. :)

Hey Dan-

Do you know how they made it so you can maintain the usage of the steering wheel controls?

Thanks!

Alex
