OMG! Just changed tranny oil to Royal Purple

I just changed my Manual Transmission Fluid from OEM to Royal Purple Syncromax MTF. I'm amazed by the smoothness of the shifts. Best $25 noticeable mod I've done in long time. The old fluid (probably LT1) flushed out pretty clean. I highly recommend the RP Syncromax for those of you with notchy shifting issues, caused by old fluid, and/or cold weather.

I have allways been an OEM fluid consumer, but decided to give the RP products a try, after the feedback on this forum. I changed out my tranny fluid with Syncromax, my diff fluid with Max-Gear 75W-140, but stayed with good old Castrol TWS10W60 engine oil, since I had a batch of 6 liters left from my previous E46/M3.

Next time around, I might try AGIP 10W60. I am a little more conservative with the engine, so I doubt I will try the 10W40 Multigrade RP Engine Oil.

I had a similar experience with a dramatic improvement using RP and 33k miles. After 1500 miles with RP, the improvement is pretty much gone (perhaps I am used to it?) I had never changed with OEM fluid...so I can't compare new vs. new.

I tried the RP and could not tell a bit of difference - I then switched back to the OEM - still couldn't tell which was which.

How long did you keep the RP in? I noticed it took about three driving errands, with a large number of gear shifts before noticing a difference.

I will take that into consideration, and post back later. What did you end up doing - returning to LT1/LT2?

I had it in for a ct least a month or so - I do remember that after speaking with my BMW tech that he said the OEM was much thicker than the RP and probably a safer route to go.

The other things is that whenever you change ANY transmission fluid depending on how long it's been, you might see a difference just from the new fluid.

I don't want to throw water on your story at all - just my experience.

No offense taken at all. Good feedback which I will take into account. New fluids would all probably feel different initially. I'll see if the RP Syncromax benefits fade away after a while, and if so, switch back to OEM LT2. It's easy and cheap enough to DIY anyways. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I got two bottles waiting on the shelf for the E34's gearbox. Just need to do the clutch anytime soon, so I'll save it for that occasion..

Along with brand new shifter linkage etc, this 1991 lady should shift like a toyota!
