They are/were not listed as an option in the 02' brochure. *Activation* is/was an option.

The brochure is incorrect since it wasn't updated when they pulled the airbags as standard for the 2002 model year. They had a brief lawyer freakout at BMWNA that year.

I wouldn't rag the seller in this case (there are indeed many who deserve it) as they may just be parroting the info they have on hand.

And to Ard, I checked my C pillar for the "SRS" stamp following a thread on the rear airbags earlier - it was not found. There seems to be some evidence that they were indeed an option in '02.

The *only* options listed in the 02' M brochure are/were: PDC, flod-down rear seats, rear sunshade, M-audio, and rear spoler deletion. Rear air-bags are listed as standard, but they were shipped deactivated. If an 02' doesn't have them....I can't explain it (but maybe there *is* an explanation ).

Well ok then...there's your explanation. I have them, but I'm 99% sure they're deactivated.

It was a liability freakout at BMWNA that year. Almost ALL 2002 M5s do not have the rear airbags since dealers didn't order them that way and buyers either didn't care or didn't know better. In order to get rear airbags that year, you HAD to specify that option on the dealer order. The 2002 brochure was in error.

FWIW, long ago I verified this with BMWNA along with the fact that "activation" of the rear air bags pertained ONLY to the door airbags. The rear head airbags (HPS) come activated from the factory.

edit: realized prior post wasn't addressed to me...
