As far as top speed goes, I can only report what he told me...
Having driven other higher end European sports cars, he just said that the M5 was the least stable, but it is a sedan, so that's no suprise.
I guess the comparison just isn't really fair. :-P
Any car (even some "sports" cars), if they don't have functional front aerodynamics to create downforce, will get light in the front at high speed. I could certainly feel the "lift" when my car was an S2; but didn't consider it "unstable".
Dinan cleverly designed the high capacity oil cooler to also be aerodynamic; tilting it 15 degrees and modifying the front under pan for flow to create downforce at high speeds. According to your posts, your dad experienced "lift" at 160 mph before he had the oil cooler installed to solve oil temp issues. You should tell him he won't experience that now.
With 3:45 diff, the S3 tops at 191 mph; 209 mph with 3:15 diff. I can attest there is no front "lift" feeling at (ahem) 175 mph and above. The car just hunkers down and feels exceptionally stable. My car and the original #1 S3 both have the oil cooler. BTW, I confirmed all of this with Steve Dinan when I picked up my car at Morgan Hill 2 weeks ago. So 'felt comfortable "exercising" her on the long trip home.

Oh, and thats not the reason for the 155 mph limit. All the major german car makers came together a long time ago, and decided a self imposed top speed of 250 kmph 155 mph. And they still adhere to that..the only exception (that i know of, is P cars...which apparently did not enter that "agreement")
And yes the S3 is an awesome car...I have been given a "ride" with the current owner of #1 Martin.....was fun, but downright frightening ! Almost soiled my pants !
His is even debadged to the point that he doesn't have the M5 on the back.
Actually that just reminded me of a funny story.
He was filling up on petrol once, a guy came up to him and said, "which BMW is that?"
He replied, "Oh it's just a 525i with an exhaust."
The guy said, "That's cool. Is that like the Type-R package?"
He's like, "Um ya..."
The guy replied, "Ya I own that Cobra over there and it's got 400hp."
He says, "Wow, that's great."
As he left the guy got behind him and they both pulled out of the station.
Just as the guy got out he pulled into the other lane to pass him.
He didn't hesitate and mashed the gas... Needless to say, the Mustang owner was shocked, I'm sure.
Apparently he didn't have 400hp. hehe
This is one of the fastest 525i with Type R package
Antwerp, thank you for posting. It's too bad it's not driveable in winter weather - my wife and I are heading for SLC in 2 weeks for some skiing at Snowbasin and Powder Mountain and I would just LOVE to see and even ride in this beast. I have my eye on that S3 kit one day for my '01 LMB M5. PM me if you think this might be possible, but I don't want to trouble anyone. Dinan's S3 M5 had no problems with my car, so maybe your dad won't, either! (LOL)

Thanks for the information. I'll pass that along to my father.
I had just had a brain storm of an idea. Your pops loans ME the car for the Vegas meet here in a couple weeks that I am going to.
No eh? Ok, just a try.
