state of the art spare tire recommendations

it looks like this topic has again surfaced on the forum, so i revisited the old posts on spare tires and emerged more confused than educated. what is the final word from the forum members who have decided to go with a spare tire?

what did you get, any tricks for minimizing trunk space usage and is there any way to go with a donut/minispare?

i've finally placed an order for my m5 and i'm starting to give consideration to practical matters in addition to fantasy. many thanks.

I'm right there with you Durango, waiting on my ordered M5 wondering about this very thing. I would love some acceptable doughnut solution to minimize weight and at least give me some vague option of getting to a safer place if stranded.

If anyone knows of anything, please post.

Chris

I remember reading a post awhile back on using the 996tt spare tire system, cost was $200-300, I don't know if any mods were required, you may want to search using different key word (s) if you didn't already find the posts I am referring to....

Here's what I plan to do:

A front rim from Bekkers $498 (better still get a used one) and a cheap Kumho tire (245/40/18) from the Tire Rack $125. I only plan to use the set-up on long drives.

Waiting for roadside assistance is a major bummer That's assuming you happen to be in a zone with cell phone coverage.

btw... you also need a jack & lug wrench from you friendly BMW dealer

The lug wrench came with the 2000 model and not with the 2001. I took mine out of my 2000 when I traded it in for the 2001. I have not heard about the 2002. There is a place for a lug wrench in the tool area.

I purchased an extra tire repair kit with a plug and green goo and an extra air pump in case the one in the car fails. This is probably the best alternative to a spare tire.

I posted the 996tt option May 4th, it's $500+ for the tire and wheel and another for $85 for an adapter.

The tire OD is 20 1/8 and it's 6.2 in. thick.

If you can't find my post, I'll repeat it later but don't have time right now.

Greg -

You might be the one to check this out for us. Could you investigate if the inflatable spare tire from your Porsche will fit correctly on the Beast?

I am very interested in this as an option to the Mobility System.

Thanks,

i haven't done it yet because of cost ($600) and i haven't sold my old front wheels and tires yet so I've been using one of them as a spare whenever i travel out of town

also investigating Dodge Stealth donut spare per other fairly recent thread, but can't find out where to get it -- Dodge dealer says they don't have a part number, comes as assembly from tire manufacturer but they don't know who the manufacturer is (it's not Bridgestone) - haven't gotten around to trying Mitsubishi yet
