Dinan engine software problem

I just got my car back from servicing at the dealer and now it runs terrible.

The dealer I went to is not a Dinan dealer. They asked if I had the software download when I picked it up. I said yes.

On my way home, it was revving very slowly and sounded flat. This occurred for 10 minutes then it cleared up. So I didn't worry about it. Today, it started acting up again. The car feels like it lost 50% power, redline is back to 6900 rpms and is running hot.

I just had the oil changed and had them run a diagnostic check of the systems. I will call my dealer in the morning to see what they did.

Has anyone run into the same problem?

I'd go to the Dinan dealer and get them to reload the software

why did the dealer ask about software? if you have an early car and they up-dated, then the Dinan software will be overwritten

Stever,

My car is an early production car. They asked if I had the software because he saw the sticker on the computer access port.

What do you mean by updating? Why would this erase the Dinan codes? The only thing they updated was my navigation computer. Thanks.

Sandy,

Steve is right! if those knuckle heads harnessed into your computer port, they could have possibly overwritten your Dinan software??

My suggestion: Don't bring your car to another dealer for service. Unless of course, the place that installed the Dinan software is unable to service your car? Are they not a BMW Dinan authorized dealer?

Very confused. What difference does it make if he has the Dinan software upgrade, he won't lose 50% of his power and the car won't sound flat. I agree that the Dinan software maybe erased and need to be re-downloaded, but he shouldn't lose soo much power. Is the Dinan dealer required to put a sticker on the CPU unit or harness?

Problem found

Problem found. I hope.

My technician read the error codes on my car this morning and it appears I have a bad camshaft sensor. The sensor faulted several times according to the BMW computer. By the way, that DIS machine is pretty cool.

I believe when the sensor went bad it ******ed the timing heavily, which explains why my car felt like a 318i. Apparently the engine's computer overides the Dinan revised redline and reduces it to 6900-7000 rpms when it senses problems. This morning when the sensor did not act up, the redline was back to 7300.

Hopefully it will be replaced tomorrow. I guess it was just a coincidence that it went bad the same day I took it to the shop for servicing. Thanks for your help. Hopefully I will have all 394 horses tomorrow.

Don't worry

Rahim and Rare M5,

Don't worry about the Dinan software. In my case, it appears to be a faulty camshaft sensor. I will keep you posted as soon as the sensor is replaced.
