So I've decided that I really like the look of the LMB with Caramel Heritage interior. Looks sharp! I'm looking at one with 27k on the clock and was looking for advice on what price would be reasonable to offer a dealership?
I mean, I realize that if this was a trade-in they gave the poor guy a very low trade-in value. Worse if the car was purchased through an auction. Thus, I don't think their $47k asking price is even remotely realistic. I'm hoping not anyways. I would love to hear what a good offering price is. I made an offer, but I'm sure they will not accept it. Thanks in advance,
Have you done all the work on that car? PPI, Asked others to look at it, BMW service history, carfax, etc?
Is this a BWM dealer or used car dealer? CPO warranty?
ah, looks like my homework has been paying off then! I've only 'offered' a price via e-mail at this time. If the delaership comes back and entertains my offer, I'll go ahead and ask a local member (to the area) to assist on a visual, but the pics really tell the whole story so that step may be ommitted. The next step would be a thorough PPI, get the paperwork and I'd be ready to go!
There was around 40pics in the ad and a free carfax which was nice. Either way, the car is WAYYYY away from me so I'll have to rely on sight unseen and then arrange for shipping. I offered $40k and won't likely budge too much from there since I'll need to ship it, as well as purchase an ext'd warranty.
This is a non "BMW" dealer, but it is a luxury car dealer and I think it's well regarded. No CPO on this car either.

No such thing. Generally all scum with a few worse that that. Recognize that they are purposefully NOT looking for problems.
Don't be fooled by their inventory or shiny and flashy website- or name...
Anyway, looks clean- hasn't been around the web at all, pictures look good. One owner. The trick it to find such owners BEFORE they sell it to the dealer for 35k! Seems like an ebay deal had no takers at 43k. I'd go no higher than the 40 you offered.
Keep in mind that a used car dealer is a 'private party' sale in my book. "dealer" is a "BMW dealer" JMHO

Ah, looks like you found it. Thank you for your feedback, I very much appreciate it. Tough thing is that many M5 owners will never post up on an enthusiast forum such as this so I will likely miss many opportunities to get to them before they trade to a dealer. Of course, I have time on my hands too so I can afford to just sit back and wait for that perfect situation!
I agree with ARD completely. Do not trust those types of $tealers.
I would very strongly caution you against buying a car from such a dealer sight unseen.
Three months ago I was almost taken to the cleaners by one of those "high line dealers" that had a "perfect" car for sale. They forgot to mention a few "minor" details and lied about the options on the car. Only found out about these things, by checking out the VIN at the dealer.
Hold off on buying this and look to buy directly from the seller, you will do better and get a clean car with a known history. Otherwise, stick with the BMW dealers. The car is new enough that you will still find some.
Good luck,
RG

I'm getting the feeling that people are suggesting I stay away from Non BMW dealerships. Either that or this particular car I'm looking at?
Either way, I keep looking in the classifieds section and not finding what I'm looking for. I'm *****ly afraid of craigslist too unless it's local and I can get a feel for the owner.
Since you have the Seriel number, try contacting your local BMW dealership service manager. Just desribe what you are doing and ask him to provide any repair maintenance inforamtion without violating his Privacy principals. Also, offer to consider buying a BMW warranty from him and ask if the car would qualify so that the Service Manager feels some obligation to help you.
I've bought several BMW's from far away dealerships sight unseen (except ebay pictures), but all the cars have still been within the BMW 4 years / 50K mile warrant program and I contaced the ebay feedback customers as well. You can also ask the far away dealer to provide you references.
Shipping the car is easy, maybe expensive if you want the car in one week, and a lot less expensive if you can wait 2 or 3 weeks.

that's a good idea re the warranty and purchasing through my local BMW dealership. However, that would limit me to the 2003 models. Not a bad thing, but I'll just continue to wait until the correct color combo.

Mitch, I bought my car from a used-car dealer and I have been very pleased with my purchase. But understand where these cars come from. Most are auction cars and dealer trade-ins that the dealer does not want to keep. Why? Usually because these cars are not the best specimens, and the new-car dealer wants to reserve his valuable lot space for the good ones. So out it goes, and the used-car dealer buys the car very right at auction or directly from the new-car dealer. That is why trade-in values are so low!
Why would you consider buying from these guys? Because you want to buy the car very right (great deal) and you understand that these cars are not perfect. Of course they might tell you the car is perfect, but then why is it not for sale at a BMW dealer? You will probably see some paint chips and the tires and wheels will not be perfect (maybe not even close). The leather might be a little worn (or more). These things are hard to see in photographs. The car might be mechanically sound (or not). You have to do a lot more due-diligence with these cars, but it can pay-off nicely. It did for me.
Buying from a BMW dealer should give you some peace-of-mind, but that is the most expensive way to go. Their pre-owned BMW inventory is probably the best around, but the cars are not cheap. Buying from an non-BMW new-car dealer can be an interesting compromise since they haven't auctioned the car, so it probably at least looks good. As someone said, dealing with used-car dealers is basically the same as dealing with an individual. But these people can be very motivated, and their cars are not necessarily junk.
