Peake Reader Question/Help

I had a SES light tonight so I pulled out the Peake reader to see what was up.
I pulled it in and looked for the Fc light and then checked for the codes. I got code 18 and code 69.
I opened up the book and went to page 12 and started looking for the two codes. I quickly realized that there are eleven different tables in the book. I also realized there are multiple code descriptions for these two different codes under different tables.
I then went back to reading the instruction to see what table I was suppose to choose from. On page six of the book it states that "the first number is not a code" The first number shown is the code table to use. It also states that if the tool does NOT display "FF" then use code table on page twelve (1996 and later).
So using the first code I read "18" I would look for table number 1 correct? Well there is no table number 1? There is a table 1b. As you can see this isn't makeing sense?
Looking at the second code that got from the reader "69" I then goto table 6 and then look for code number 9. There is no code number 9 listed in this section.
My first instynct was to simply take the code and look it up and not seperated the numbers. If I do that I find multiple code definations:

18 - Table 00 - "Ignition Coil, Cyl #4"
18 - Table 0F - "Mixture Control, higher load, Cyl #1-4"
18 - Table 1b - "Ignition Coil, Cyl #3"
18 - Table 06 - "A/C Compressor"
18 - Table 07 - "A/C Compressor"
18 - Table 09 - "A/C Compressor"
18 - Table 11 - "Fuel Injector, Cyl #4"
18 - Table 15 - "Fuel Injector, Cyl #4"
18 - Table 18 - "Ignition Coil, Cyl #3"
18 - Table 19 - "Fuel Injector, Cyl #4"

69 - Table 0b - "DME, EEPROM failure"
69 - Table 0F - "Control unit self-test, ROM faulty"
69 - Table 15 - "VANOS, intake mechanically stuck"
69 - Table 18 - "Engine coolant temperature, Plausibility"
69 - Table 19 - "Intake camshaft VANOS, over-******ed"

Now I hope that I didn't type all that for nothing So a little help would be appreciated.

The first number, not the first digit. It will flash a first number (table number) and then a second number (code), table number, code, table number code, etc.

That first code you got is prob table 18, b9 (not 69).

Ahhh yes, thank you very much. It now makes complete sense. Now reading that code since there isn't a code "69" and it does state that the letter "B" will show as a small "b" or what looks like a 6 there is a code for that in the book "exhaust camshaft VANOS position control, Cyl #4" I'm going to have to look into what this could mean. Thanks again for the help btw.

So the only code was 18 - b9? Nothing else?

(Yeah, you typed that all in for nothing! )

I'd reset it and see if it trips again. CPS seem to fail slowly- once in a while, then more consistantly.

Did you notice any reduction in power or 'blatty' exhaust note? That is the classic symptom of an exhaust cps.

or, shop around for the best deal, order it with ground shipping and pop it in after the turkey dinner!

A

LOL thanks for pointing out all that wasted typing. Felt like an *** after Ag Surfer's posting showing how simple it was.
I was out and about tonight and this souped up Honda (turbo charged) pulled up along me at a red light. So I hit the sport mode and off we went. It was a good run but when I hit third gear I heard that exhaust note you mentioned. The car ran fine but I did listen further for the next 3 or 4 mile and all was well. I stopped for my business and about and hour later I returned to the car and there was the SES light. This was the first for this code.

I'm trying to figure out what side of the engine is the exhaust camshaft sensor cyl #4 is on. Is it on the passenger side or the drivers side? I did a search but i only found information on the where the banks are and not the cycliner locations. I'm looking for what side of the engine cycliner #4 is on. Thanks guys.

I just had 2nd SES (@35Kmiles):

0B - Exhaust Camshaft Pos Sensor cyl #5-8
A2 - Cranshaft, Camshaft Pos Sensor CPS cyl #5-8
45 - Knock Sensor, cyl #5-6
E8 - Evaporative Emission purge valve

And no sympton of power loss
I'll reset it for now and see if its come back. I think I should start stocking these parts...

I had E8 2 month ago, which I thought because that one time I try to topped off my fill (which I normally never do . I guess its a sign the Purge Valve is on the way..

Regardz,

J Irwan
