Adding Sirius to a 2001 E39?

I have looked through the board, and found information for adding OEM Sirius to 2003 and up M5s - but I have a 2001. Can it be done? I already have the MKIV nav computer installed, and the latest software update. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Yes, you can- but two issues, maybe three.

Do you have the 16:9 display?
Do you have an new BMW radio? (Maybe an issue with the connector on your car matching the new radio connector.)
You may need to create or buy adapters for the CD player connections. (I think there should be pictures in my post on 2003 sirius which will show the connections so you can compare.)

The big deal, if you will, is the NAV. Once you have that it should be good to go.

Motatti did this on his, so it works. Have you looked at the details on bimmernav.com? A bit confusing, but the info is there.

Good luck-

A

Edit. He beat me by 4 minutes...

I talked to Martin about this very question last night (posted on the 'XM' thread). I too was confused and lost, but now I am found.. You probably have the old Alpine radio. This needs to be replaced with the Becker radio, which has an aux input. BMW now sells the adapter for the connection. The parts you will need are (from the Bimmernav http://www.bimmernav.com/BMW_Sirius_Satellite_Radio_Retrofit.html):
BMW Trunk Mount Radio - P/N 65 12 6 976 961 (Or 65 12 6 976 962) OR NEWER $430-with Sirius and BMW MP3 Audiotext support
P/N 65.12-0 398 140 Sirius Satellite radio ($234.24)
BMW MKIV Navigation Computer
P/N 61.12.6.913.957 Old to New style radio wiring harness ($33.20)
P/N 61.12.6.913.955 Old to New style radio antenna harness ($12.20)
P/N 61.12.6.924.785 Old to New style audio input adapter ($15.00) ( more pics 1, 2 )
P/N 61.12.0.140.716 (6 foot) 6 wire CD Input cable ($13.12)
P/N 84.11.0.141.978 Sirius to CD Changer adapter cable ($13.80)
Sirius Antenna: I selected the TERK SIR3 w/ TERK SIR-SP ($75.00) -- FOR OLD Sirius Module P/N 84.11.0.153.365
New style radio retrofit documents from BMW

Martin suggested ordering these part from

http://www.crevierbmw.com/parts_order_form.htm

He said if you mention you are from Roadfly, you can get a 20% discount.

Hope this helps.

Dave

It would be okay to replace the radio if it is the wrong one, the mute function in it is corroded and doesn't work properly anymore, this would be solved with a new radio. Looks like about $850 in parts?

XM Radio in the E39M5

if XM is more your taste, the newer XM BMW receiver SHOULD work once the car is 'sirius prepped'...

A

PS $825 minus 20% discount if crevier will give you that. maybe worth looking for a radio on ebay ... never know...

I have ordered the parts listed from Bimmernav, hopefully I will be able to figure out where all the cables go when I get them. Some of the part numbers have changed, but I'm pretty sure I got the right parts.

By the way, the BMW people at the dealer were very hesitant to let me order these things, they kept insisting that it wouldn't work. I told them that I trusted my friends at M5Board.

ARD:

I made a couple inquires at Bev Hills BMW regarding XM Radio and they said that there is Nothing in the BMW parts inventory for XM Radio since BMW has an exclusive deal Sirius.

What specific part are you referring to when you say "XM BMW Receiver" ? ?

I think ard was referring to the XM module by Blitzsafe:

Which part numbers changed? Also, did you get the 20% discount?
