Can an e39 M5 be converted to SMG?

After driving my e60 M5 a friend of mine with an e39 M5 wants to know if and how much it would cost to have his e39 converted to SMG. What do you think, would the cost be too high?

The guy seems to enjoy the SMG, like me.

Then easier just to buy the e60M5 SMGIII. Surely would cost less.

I agree, would probably be more sensible to just buy an E60 rather than go through the headache of retro-fitting.

I think the car would have to be completely re-engineered. Just like trying to put the V10 engine inside the E39... just not something thats plausible without rebuilding the car from scratch. Not to mention the computer mastermind to build and program a new ECU to work for the tranny.
I would say that BMW themselves would have to do this kind of modification.

Is it mainly the paddle shifts he is after, or the entire drivetrain?
If its just the paddle shifts, I though there was once a discussion, on the E39 Forum, about retrofitting an smg sheel to make it shift, but im not sure how that panned out.

If he's dead set, and older E46 M3 with SMG is a very similar car in ride and handeling, and is much more fun.

These guys would be the best bet but their universal shifter is designed for a sequential box for a regular manual box it would need a more complicated shifter like on the e46 m3. The other option would be a beefed up automatic from a 540 and the wheel off of an m3 wired into the steptronic shift inputs for the tranny. The most complicated part would making the mss52 talk to the egs. I'm sure it's possible but probably not worth it when you can head down to the local dealer and buy the 500 horsepower smg equipped e60 chassis m5.

the e46 M3 and e39 M5 have the same tranny and the SMG is just a unit tacked onto the stock tranny. The hard part would be all the sensors.
