The check engine light came on a few weeks back, the mechanic ran the code and said one of the cats is going bad. So he turned off the light, car kept running fine.
Now on my way home from the meet tonight, the light came on again. But this time at low rpm's it would studder.
Anyone have this problem before? Could it just be the cats going bad? Hopefully, atleast it will be an excuse for a full exhaust
I think its something other than cats since you describe that the engine is running poorly at idle. If you are getting a cat inefficiency code, all this means is that the post cat oxygen sensors are finding some unburnt fuel. It will assume that the problem is the cats, but it could be something upstream which is causing the mixture to be too rich. It is possible that the cats got plugged up, but this would typically result in significant loss of power above idle. Idle would be fine.
A couple of things to check out (other than the obvious rescanning the codes which are stored):
-- MAFs
-- Oxygen sensors
However, if they want to change your cats under warranty (either standard factory warranty or federal emmissions warranty) I'd say let them at it.
Iirc, cats are covered under the federal emissions warranty to 80k miles.
I wouldn't be thinking vanos repair yet. More likely MAFs or cps. You need to get a Peake reader.. it will help lift the veil of uncertainty. Pull the codes and post them on this board.. you'll be glad you did.

Well my beast just went over 91k miles
Well hopefully its not vanos, I will see if I can get ahold of a peake reader or any kind of scanner that will fit my car. I'll let you guys know what we come up with.
