Nav problems with copied cd

The last weeks I've been in Sweden on holiday. There I've used copy of the Navtech map cd for scandinavia. After a while I noticed that my system kind of rebooted itself: The screen went black and then came on again, controls locked some seconds, just like when you start the car. When it came back on again it just continued with the navigation. There was no interruption in the music during this reboot. The system then kept doing this every 5-10 minutes or so. One of the times it did this I got tired of it and turned the monitor off, then it refused to come on again before I stopped and turned the ignition off.

I also had a incident were the stere hanged up completely: It was silent and refused to respond to anything, even power off! The OBC and Nav was still working. Wonder if this was also related to cd problem?

Have anyone else experienced this problem with copied cds? I've used a copy of a German cd in my previous car for about a year, without problems.

If you use copied CD you have to copy them very carefully (1xburn and use a good copy program like cd-clone the cdrom drive seem to be very sensative (finger print even on an original cd can could the system to lock)

I've been using copies right from the start (my originals are kept safe at home) and I've only had a problem once

the nav was displaying fine but was unable to load the map (but that was right after I'd inserted a new CD - I just yanked it out and picked some lint off it and its been fine ever since)

I burnt them using Nero from Ahead and CloneCD from ElaborateBytes at 4x

ciao

Stefan,

Since you work in the aerospace biz you should have colleagues with UNIX boxes. You can use an (open source) program called "md5" to create a unique hash (or checksum) of the data on the original and copied disks. The MD5 checksum comparison will tell you if your copy is bad. The problem you descibed may not be that the data is incomplete or otherwise corrupted-- could be a host of other things.

Being in the s/w devlopment biz I've used Gear CDR Mastering Software-- it's a professional package that your company may very well have on hand. If your company is large and you don't know if you have the stuff I described try sending a message to your internal bulletin board.

Good luck,
Doug

I too have been using a copy since day 1 and kept the original at home. I have not encoutered any problem. I used Nero to burn it.

Later,
Kenneth

did the copy cd have a label affixed to it? often times these labels will gum up the works- something to be avoided.

Doug,

I've found something called md5 on our SUN server. What is the syntax to use it?
