Varying Appearance of MAFs?

Got my MAFS from DavidS today and noticed one of the MAFS is a cheap knock-off, and the other was a real Bosch part. (No I'm not mad or trying to make DavidS look bad, I already asked for a refund, all is good!)

Is this why some people are having trouble with the new MAFS?

Looking at the imitation MAFS, it has the Bosch part number ingraved into it (the Bosch one is stamped), and the wire sensor looks cheap, thinner, and different shape than the real Bosch one. Even the rubber gasket looks different. THe whole unit just looks like a cheap imitation of the real thing. How long of a life would an imitation MAFS have?

Anyone else have a MAFS that looks like the fake Bosch one in the pic?

Maybe the thinner wire and shape will not change the way it works (maybe some of you electrical engineers can chime in here), but again it's not a real Bosch part, so who knows!

I never put the parts in the car to see if it would work right, has anyone else?

Hmmm.

"fake" is a bit of a stretch, based on what you are describing!

They may be real Bosch parts, just made at a different time than the other Bosch part!

Companies like Bosch, VDO, etc, etc are constantly modifying production processes and locations.... this may simply reflect the REAL bosch part made more cheaply, or a part made in another country, or just made at a different point in the life cycle of Bosch's normal production.

Why don't you go buy a BMW "real" part and see how IT compares? What will you do if the new BMW MAFS are also "fake", "cheap" and "imitation"?

A

Perhaps this Bosch part is manufactured in Penang, malaysia, which are targetted for the South East Asian market!

The Bosch MAFS in the picture is a real Bosch part and would be used my BMW, VW, etc. No where on the "other" part does it say it is a Bosch part. Just thought I was getting (2) Bosch MAFS. After looking at the construction of the "other" one, it isn't something I would wan to used, as comparied to the real Bosch part. Make sense?

Interesting post. One would hope that the quality control at Bosch for such a critical component would be pretty tight...

I just received two MAFs in the mail yesterday from the GB and will look them over when I get home.

Although these are not VW MAFs, it HAS been interesting to note the apparent range of experiences with VW MAFs. Perhaps they might be associated with QC issues?

I understand that the GB Bosch MAFs have a spotless track record of board member satisfaction. Perhaps DavidS might comment the the different appearances of these two MAFs? It would certainly give me pause!

Dave

No.

I still don't know how you can unequivocally call it a non-bosch part, nor why it is "imitation" or "fake".

Your fake part looks just like a pair of VW parts I just got- no 'bosch' name on it. Perhaps there are 'Bosch units' and 'VW units'?

My decision would be on function, not appearance. I wonder what David has to say on this? I know he is not handling shipping here in the US...

A

PS My OE units and VW units run identically 140-140 L/hr, no issues

Dave, what does GB mean? Does that identify the source?

Thanks.
