No spare tire!

I know my M5 is supposed to have run flat tires, but I guess the previous owner decided to put regular Goodyear tires on it instead. So, now what should I do? I don't what to have to buy new run flat tires.
  1. Is it true that the BMW M-system tire inflator device in the trunk only works on run flat tires?
  2. Should I purchase a spare tire and jack and keep it in the trunk? What a pain that would be... a $75K vehicle and I have to decided between carrying golf clubs or a spare tire and jack!
  3. Could I just purchase a can of "Fix-a-flat" spray and carry that with me?

DM5, my understanding is that the M system is basically fancier Fix-a-flat. Doesnt have to be used on Runflats.
Also my understanding that BMW offers free towing to nearest BMW dealer for all non spare equipped M cars.

M5s never came with either spares or run flats. there is, or should be, a kit under the trunk floor with a compressor and two cans of german fix a flat.

I've had one nail in six years/74k miles. i plugged it on the side of the road with a $5 kit and didn't even lose enough air to trigger the low pressure warning alarm.

you could carry a spare but what a pita that would be if you use your trunk for luggage. no, even cooler, you could put on a roof rack and carry spares up there, like baja wanabees!

i hate them fix-a-flat stufff. i really wish that they had put in a spare tire instead but i guess that would make the car heavier than it already is.....
Rumor says that's one of the reason...

1.Your car is not supposed to have run flat tires, bmw does not use them on M cars. The M mobility kit is there for that, and you have lifetime roadside assistance for flat tires.
2. Sure, if you want to. I have one that i use on longer trips. If you had a flat, a jack and spare would be much handier than golf clubs, though the clubs would give you something to do while you wait for roadside assistance.
3. Sure, but why if you already have the M mobility kit. Has the goo, and a compressor. You should look thru your owners manual, lots of good info about this in there.

There is no spare because it will not fit with the battery and exhaust in the way.

I heard that run-flats suck. Heavy, worse performance, noisy. Somewhere there's a thread about 'em. If I only I could find that darn "Search" button...

I have AAA and never thought about the lifetime roadside assistance. That phone # would be handy to have in case I didn't want the call to be counted against my limit for AAA. So what's that phone # again?

On my car, there is a decal under the trunk lid, on the tool kit, with the tool kit, with the roadside assistance info.

Cool! Good to know. My Mobility kit goop can is expired too. I hope I don't get a flat. If I do, I'll call that #.

Is that for ever or during the warranty period?

Dont forget to let the air out of one of your tires if your car ever dies too. Get BMW to tow you to the dealer for free! :p:dunno:

Since I dont have an M yet, I cant say for sure, but if I remember what I have read, then its for life of the car.

After my kids broke the rear one for the third time - just getting in and out of the car - I glued the damned thing shut. It's never given me a moments problem since then.

Your right Mark the runflats sucks, noise level is not that bad from my experience and also newer 3'ser and Z4's (no spare) have runflats nowadays (not sure about 5'ser)...

I'm pretty sure 'lifetime roadside assistance' means for the car's lifetime. the normal roadside assistance expires with the warranty/cpo coverage.

Is that how much an 02 M5 is going for now? If it was a spare you were looking for, you bought the wrong car.

I have been towed twice, once on New years eve the other time while on my way to the airport to pick up a friend, bec the tire shredded while going 70 on the freeway. That goo does not work too well when there is no rubber left on the rim. I was not too pleased, esp with the timing.

It isn't perfect. But I still love that car, 5 years later.

I suppose that "center" refers only to a dealer... anyone know?
Yes they normally tow you to the nearest dealership...(own experience)...
