Nitrous questions?

Hey how's it going. I was wondering is there anybody here which is running just nitrous in their car or seen it be done? Would you guys recommend a nitrous car on the e39s? Which company is recommened? Also how much can be added safely on stock compressions and all...50 shot? 150 shot?

I'm kinda interested in maybe doing this, but not so sure yet. So I hope you all can please help me out and give me some info and advice on this, thanks!

Follow this link to a discussion thread on 1/4 mile acceleration in E39's and here's a 2006 BMW M5 Nitrous Drag Racing Video, in which an E60 ran the 1/4 in 11.581 @ 126.350. Sounds awesome, complete with "hiss" at the beginning of the burnout...

PS: Lots of discussion has occurred indicating that the whole engine should be beefed up if you're going to exceed 600hp; and drivetrain components likewise. A couple of members have Discovery Automotive's "El Diablo" and the twin of El Diablo, which are supercharged and were built to put out 800-1000hp. One broke a driveshaft, and now runs carbon fiber shaft.

Dinan makes the S3 supercharged and 50 state emissions legal @ somewhere between 630-670HP, complete w/warranty, for major $$$. I'm saving my pennies!

Be advised, Big HP is a risky proposition, and you should have lots of $$$ laying around for maintenance and repairs.

Here's a link to another thread. They discuss the car in the video, and it's owned by a M5board member, and he discusses the NOS setup. Use the "search" feature to save time in the future.

hope that answers your question!

I ran a dry kit on my E39 523i. Works fine, but I'd recommend to go with a wet kit.

If your using this on an M5, I'd start with a 50hp setting just to be on the safe side. You should be fine up to 100hp, but if you start stepping up beyond this ... take it slowly.

I believe most previous installations have gone direct port (8 individual nozzles) and this would be the ideal setup, plumbed directly into the velocity stacks. However, this becomes very intricate with running your lines, cutting holes etc. Perhaps just two nozzles in the intake tubes would be a good alternative. I use the ZEX kits.

Make sure you have a wideband o2 setup when you do your tests after installation, keep it rich and safe. Only activate nitrous at WOT and preferrably above 2,500rpm. Make sure not to hit the rev limiter while on the bottle!

I'm a distributor for ZEX, so I might be biased . Enjoy!

To be even more safe you can add a WOT switch (which will only actitvae the NOS at WOT) and a window switch (which will apply the NOS at a set RPM and end it at another ie. before the redline)

I use both of these saftey devices on my Cobra and run a 150hp wet shot with no problems.

IMHO the S62 engine is too pricey to start playing with nitrous. There are significant gains that can be made across the board with headers and the like. More expensive yes but you also aren't potentially playing with fire and a 30k engine.

2nd that. This isn't like my Cobra where I can tear the block down in my basement and order a $1000 rebuild kit from Summit...

Exactly. I can go down to my local junkyard today and pick over several hundred 350 small blocks and have my choice for a few hundred dollars. Beat up used S62 engines on this board regularly sell for 10k+.

Makes you wonder if anyone has dropped a Chevy V8 in a BMW. I wonder if the Corvette Z06 motor would fit...

The 5L (~302CI) we have now is cramed in there. The old Z06 with the 350 may fit, but doesn't the new Z06 have some monster 400+ CI motor in there? I think that would be a project and a half lol..

The new Z06 is a 7L. Would be tight if not impossible.

There really isn't a size difference between a 5.7 L and a 7.0 L...
