BMW upgrade

Why in the world would BMW not offer the changes needed to take the ultimate auto a step further in handling.

If the major gripe about the M5 is understeer, it would seem to me that this could be easily corrected or offered as a "competition" option if BMW doesn't want the liability of some hotshoe bringing the rear end around with too much (or too little) throttle.

Any thoughts?

IMO, the understeer is no that bad. Yes it does understeer but severe understeer on the M5 often comes from poor driving, i.e taking a corner to fast or braking to late.

With some small changes you can virtually remove the tendency to understeer. This will however compromise the ride comfort.

I think BMW don't think that they can make any money out of this since most M5 owners are happy with the car as it is.

I think they are wrong and should offer a kit with better handling and perhaps better brakes and that they would make money out of it.

Then again the M5 is almost as fast as Porsche 996 C2 around Nürburgring's Nordschleife (M5 8min 20s, 996 C2 8min 17s), so the handling can't be that bad, right?

Cheers,
/Johan

Bart, I seem to remember in the early reviews that the understeer was just right for this street machine that performs so well on the track. Sort of a compromise.

I agree with johann on brakes but with that comes the inevitable squealing and cost.

Johan,

You seem to be very familiar with the Nordschleife. I've been there only one time and I remember there was no possibility to make a whole lap around the track (you must exit after each lap and re-enter the track -> if you've paid ). My question is simple : how do you manage to get a full lap time ? 8m20 for example is from the start to the end ?

I don't get 8.20!
When they test the cars they close the track for public use and they can run the whole lap.

When we deadly people drive there, you take the time from when you pass under a bridge just after you enter the track to when you under a Gantry. This is called Bridge to Gantry. To get a time comparable to the ones in magazines etc. you add 20-23s depending on how fast your car is. For the M5 you add 20s!

Cheers,
/Johan
