Thus far I've found a dealer in CA with no waiting list for $6k over list. I'm assuming thats around $70k list, so ~$76k.
Anyone know of someone in CA who can beat this?
Also, some real brief Q's that I'm sure every veteran here already knows:
1) They are ending prod of the M5 after 2002? What then?
2) As a self employed business use car, being able to deduct a majority of the car, would it then be more favorable to lease, loan, or buy outright the car (since you could now deduct the interest, etc)?
Well that's about as good as you are going to get. For less than that, I'd be selling you my 2002 E39's spot. (Hey!! I am a business man!!)
It's a week 39 production car. This translates to an arrival date of mid to late October.
Check your Private message for my phone #, or email me at: bomawin@yahoo.com
You other question that relates to the deductibility of your car's expense. It is a lil' more complicated (and depends on how aggressive you want to be). In general if you are a "schedule C" filer, (dependings on your profession, but we'll assume you are an IT contracter, where you travel client to client) a safe % to deduct would be 80% (although youand I now that you wouldn't communte w/ the M5). In this case your M5 lease payment will be appx. $1,500 a months. You can take appx. 80% of that. But remember that there is a mandatory "add back" on automobiles (pending on price, and year, years in service, etc.) In this case, my guess-timate is around $2,000. So ($1,500 X 12=$18,000, then subtract $2,000= $16,000, $16,000 X 80% = $12,800.
This is an arbitrary number, and you need to check w/ you tax preparer for the exact figure. I think this will give you an IDEA.
regards,
beewang

I believe the base price on the beast is $73K-$74K so if that one particular dealer wants to mark it up $6K, you'd be looking at $80K before tax, luxury tax, title and license fee (which is about 10% total). The grand total is going to cost you $88K.
It's better off getting the car from out of state at MSRP so you can use that $6K towards aftermarket/performance upgrade.
I really hate to see anyone paying for something that is not necessary and avoidable.

If your in California and you want a new M5 at MSRP, it is not going to happen before the end of the production if you are ordering now. Period. Oh, there might be an exception here and there, but it is not the norm. Worse still, you need to go way.......out of state because California BMW dealers have infected the surrounding states as well with this markup creation.
Best bet is East coast and smaller dealers. Go to the BMW website for a complete listing of dealers and send them a mass email. You will get a quick response at MSRP. It really works.
Try getting on the list at Niello in Sacramento. I was on it for just a few months before my name came up for an MSRP production slot.
If that's too long just keep calling around the N. Cal dealers (e.g. in Roseville, Modesto, etc.) as they'll get cars in from time to time and will unload them at MSRP if you are quick. I found about one or two per month that way. Even Stephens Creek have been known to sell at MSRP.
It all depends how patient/persistent you are, and how fussy about colours & options.
Niello, is where I am getting my car. MSRP if you wait on the list. Although when my order came up they tried to tell me it was now 10K over. I talked to the General Manager and got it taken care of.
Because of the sudden price change, I talked to the Sales Manager at East Bay BMW. Great guy. A good member of this board directed me to him. He sells at MSRP with no hassle. Everything is up front. I called in July and he told me no problem go get one before the end of the production run. I was 15 on the list at that time. Anyway if you're willing to wait, East Bay is a good choice.
Niello wants $10k over MSRP, as they'e changed their policy (I guess).
East Bay BMW is at MSRP, but they''ve "sold" out the '02 production (I think they estimated 15 M5's coming for the year and they have like 30 people on the waiting list).
Prestige BMW (in Santa Rosa) is at MSRP but they have 15 on the wait list and expect only 9 '02 M5 coming to them. They don't expect any to drop out and they are not taking deposits.
Valley BMW (Modesto) is at $5k over MSRP.
I don't about the other dealers (Sonnen, SF BMW, etc.) in the Bay Area because most will quote at least $5k over MSRP.
Try out of state or So. California. Crevier (Santa Barbara) is not taking deposits, but they have a secondary "list" for M5s that are turned down by those on the wait list. They also may receive an extra M5 from BMW as an extra allocation. This is offered down the list and then to the secondary list.
I'm on a wait list at an out of state dealer for MSRP.
When I was looking for my Beast I called dealerships in Miss., Ark, La, New Mexico, Ok, Id, etc... I can't tell you how many dealerships can get you a M5 with 3-5 months at MSRP! I used the BMW website for the dealer list.
