CPS(Cam position sensor) question

in looking through the threads

Im trying to determine why the car has a lugging of the engine noise around 3500 rpm...doesnt seem to pickup as much as it did a few weeks ago

Im thinking this is a CPS issue but could it be something else?

the lugging engine noise just gets real deep as I give it gas pass 3500 rpm then around 4500 it seems to get back to normal

now this doesnt happen all the time but it is starting to happen more frequently

if it is cps can this be easly identifiable at the dealer and whats the cost to fix

man she dissapointed me tonight and the noise was enough for me just to drive around 3000

Weird.

bad cps should not be just at certain RPMs but I suppose it could start out like that. each one is around $250 total if the dealer does it- one thrid that if you do it.

Problem is most cps failures manifest as a code and SES light, I thought.... do you have a peake code reader? (You might consider it, one use and it is break even)

Have you done the MAF test?

Miles, year, recent maintenance? Airfilters all new?

A

hmmm

2001 42k just had it inspected sept 8th and some minor repairs to pass inspection

but drove it on a long roadtrip soon after at the end of the road trip check engine light came on but has been off since

had nasty rain storm about two weeks ago and drove through some 2ft water ---symptoms happened soon after

thought it was water related

then my check oil level went on recently and I kinda laxed on checking it since I havent driven it much but tonight was when the lugging noise started to occur so I put some oil in for fear that I was on the verge of siezing the engine-- im sure it wasnt going to..... but that lugging sound ... i could feel it in the car a big rumble coming from the rear just had me very worried about it

Uh-oh. Sorry to say this but you might have had some serious engine damage. If you drive through deep water there's a good chance your engine inhales water into the intake. When that happens, it goes to the cylinders where the pistons try to compress it, but water is mostly incompressible. Something has to give, so the result is bent valves or possibly broken piston rings. You should have your car inspected by a good independent shop and tell them what happened. Hope I'm wrong about this and all that happened was the water contaminated the MAFS, which are easily changed.

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

The error that set the light will still be stored. Important info.

I'm having trouble with 'lugging noise' and 'big rumble from the rear'.. they aren't painting a picture for me. The classic cps failure, for the exhaustCPS, is a blatty exhaust sound and markedly low power.

How are your air filters? Nice and dry?

well i cant exactly say it was 2ft

of water it was just driving through a bad rainstorm where everyone goes like 10 mph becuase there is significant water on the highway maybe more like 5-6 inches

I can chek the air filters... they are dry they are dirty and need changing

However if it is the cps is this something I can drive with for awhile just to expect a lcak of performance or does engine damage start to creep in the longer i let it go

I have about a 200 mile trip on Saturday and I dont want it to be somethng that leaves me ina tough spot

I would bring it in to the dealer TODAY, just to check what's wrong. They can see in 20 seconds if you have a bad CPS. And I wouldn't dare to drive more than 30 miles when the check engine oil level warning came up. You're dealing with a very expensive engine here!

In the future, make sure you always have an extra litre of oil in the trunk. Whenever the check oil level warning comes up, add that litre from the trunk.

edit: I would not start this 200 mile trip before having the car inspected by a dealer.

this sounds very much like CPS. If you need help send me a PM and we can talk on the phone.

I would be careful with dealers, you never know what you are going to get when you go to one.

Very much so, but shouldn't affect 'lugging and driveability'. Combined with maybe 02 or cps I suppose it might appear that way.
