Glad it was an E-Z repair. The auxilurary electronics on BMW's are not the most reliable. Not as bad as Lucas, but error prone none the less. Thank you for sending the old part to me, and I'll attempt to disect it and find out what blew.

Thanks, rassi and Anita. With rassi's detailed instructions and Anita's updates, I replaced the unit in my 2002 car with very few surprises. I used a screwdriver to release the two clips on either side of the wire bundle and it took me 45 minutes, but otherwise it was exactly as described. I'm not a DIY type but I would also rate it "easy". My biggest frustration was trying to work while holding a flashlight in one hand :-).

I getting to like this m5board!

Ok, so to clarify symptoms:
Fan is intermitent, sometimes on, sometimes off, blows hard/light, no matter if it's on AC or vent. Plus ac dosen't even come on. Correct?

Classic symtoms. Final stage resistor. DIY if you don't mind working upside down under the dash. New and "improved"? part, so the replacment may look a little different.
Regards,
Jerry

New Part Number

My first real drive of my M5 (headed to date with someone I've never met in person, no less) was on the Washington DC Beltway on a warm evening. By the end of the trip, the outside air temp had hit 91 degrees F.

Ugh.

When I got in the car, I noticed that the fan didn't want to work no matter how I set the speed control. Called my buddy who has worked on BMWs for 30 years - he says Final Stage Unit.

Searched the web, found that there's a new part number:
64 11 6 923 204

Picked one up today from the guys at getBWMparts.com for $80 and change. Jason there tells me this design lasts a lot longer.

Cheers,
Pete

Guys

Help!!

I'm in the middle of doing this job and have reached the point where I have taken the plug out of the old FSU and released the tab - at least the fsu is no longer tightly clamped into it's position. The old fsu is wobbling about all over the place under the dash but the SOAB will not pull out as it seems that the gap is just too small to withdraw it. Do I need to keep pressing the tab at the same time as I pull the old fsu out?? I'm already an hour and a half into the job and getting pretty damn frustrated. Anyone got an idea as to what I am doing wrong??I have a RHD car and the whole shooting match is just so damned hard to locate and work on. I'm pretty handy at mechanical type stuff but this has gotten me stumped....

Steve

Sorted at last.Needed to keep tab pushed in so that the old unit could slide out. Then spent 30 mins getting the new one in place. What an awkward job to do. I did the whole thing by feel with no torch largely due to the fact that Im and old git and it's hard contorting myself into the correct position. Thankfully now all back together and wiorking fine. Phew...

Hi Steve glad to hear you sorted it! Maybe due to the layout of a RHD car is what makes it more difficult?
