Check Engine / VANOS

Guys,

I have a 2000 M5 with about 75000 kms on it and recently, the check engine light came on. I took it in to get checked out and a few codes were recorded (cam sensor was one of them). In any case, they reset the codes as they believed that some of the secondary codes were related to one primary fault. They asked that I drive the car again until the light came back on and then to get it in quickly. The light came on later that same day, so I took it back in and there were a bunch of different codes. Vanos bank 2 misfires, cam sensors etc. The dealership is now telling me that they need to replace the Vanos Bank 2, exhaust cam sensor, intake cam sensor, valve cover gaskets and intake gaskets all to the tune of about $6k. Ouch.

There are not a lot of M5's in my neck of the woods, so I am not sure how many these techs have worked on. (Little different story when I had my 540). I don't mind doing it if it needs to be done, but I'm feeling like it may be a little bit of "don't know what's wrong so we'll replace everything" approach. Can someone fill me in on what the Vanos is and perhaps give me a little bit of an opinion on whether I'm just being cheap?

Tks,

Gord

Could be Solenoid valve...

I had a similar situation...and so did a buddy of mine. The $tealer wanted to do a full Vanos repair/replacement, but my aftermarket warranty company wouldn't approve. Made them do the vanos leak test again, and found that the solenoid to bank #1 was bad...that was replaced at <$1000, of which I only paid deductible ($100) and difference in labor charges ($200).
Yes, I paid more than I cared to, but it certainly wasn't a $6k job...what kind of Vanos are they putting in that's gonna cost $6k?
I'd be suspicious of that price personally. Have them perform the leak test and show you the results...if you see anything about a solenoid valve, insist that they do that first...could very well be a bad Vanos, but there are other components that could go ou to cause the codes you're seeing.

I just had a situation like this too. Lights came on, took it in and the dealer found bank 1 exhaust CPS bad, bad cat, bank 1 VANOS faults. Supposedly when this happens they want to repalce all the CPS. I struck a deal and paid 900 for a new VANOS, all 4 CPS and a new cat. Bill should have been around 5800 i think... Ive been a long time customer so they helped me out.

I actually just got my car back. the dealer diagnosed it as Vanos bank one.. I knew it was the Solenoids... But the warranty company approved the change of the entire Vanos. So now my car has a new Bank one vanos, I have an extra one in the garage with bad solenoids that I need to replace... WOOOOHOOO. Love the extended warranty !

It could for sure be just the CPS (whichever is throwing the code). I'd replace that myself first then see if the code comes back on and which ones do. Buy yourself a Peake reader if you haven't done so already.

Guys,

I have the $tealer (great new term I am quickly becoming endeared to) replacing the CPS. Next I will be looking at trying the Solenoid.... Next problem, he told me the CPS is avialable tomorrow. The Solenoid is not available in Canada right now and may take 2 to 3 weeks to get in. Anyone with some idea where I can source one?

Cam Position sensors WILL also generate VANOS faults. There are many posts on this. Once the valve timing is lost due to a cps failure you will see misfire codes and vanos codes

Replace the CPS that shows a fault, every one- sounds like bank 2 intake and exhaust... then reset and drive.

I wouldn't bother with the solenoids for now.

Valve cover gaskets leaking? not a must do until you diagnose and fix this other issue

A

There are many, many posts with
