That will probably give as much gain as the Dinan intake tubes!

At least the Dinan tubes look cute with the carbon fiber---the tin foil will not look nearly as impressive.
What astonishes me is that people don't put speakers under their hood to make "monster car sounds." In other words, the system would watch the engine and make the correct noise at the correct moment. Even people inside the car would be fooled by the "monster engine" (hah, hah) lurking beneath the hood!
In fact, I could have a line of "ultra-performance" mufflers which watched the air pressure coming in and made monster sounds at the back... you'd just have to run power to them for the electronics and internal speakers.
And I'd make them for rice cars as well, of course.
Is anybody here a venture capitalist? I know exactly how to build the prototypes!

kgk: not a bad idea...now that you mention it. A little looking around has led to this:

Until Dinan's SC is ready, maybe I can just throw this in so I can get the M to sound as cool as my truck.

OK, Guys. You didn't believe me the first time, so I had an engineer friend do a more formal analysis. He isn't a thermal transfer/fluid dynamics expert, but he is pretty confident in his analysis, at least within an order of magnitude. In order to calculate the thermal transfer you have to factor in stuff like the "Reynolds Number" which determines how turbulent flows react in various size chambers. Anyway, recall from our earlier discussion that there is 250 liters of air per second moving through that box. The air cools the box a lot, the box warms the air a little. But making reasonable assumptions for ambient temperature, and the size and temp of the box, you should be able to lower the air temperature by....
Are you ready?
0.44 degrees centigrade. A pittance.
Even if he IS off by an order of magnitude, you might lower the temp by 4 degrees. Still not enough to have any effect.
So don't waste your sticky tape.

Greg,
I think you misunderstood some of us, I most definetly believed you the first time.
As much as Dinan intake tubes means 0hp gain in my book.
Cheers,
/Johan

Believe it or not they actually have Anti-noise generators now. They can actually produce a sound wave which is exactly opposite to the sound wave being generated in effect canceling the noise out. There is a car in production today which uses this. I can't remember which.
I like your Idea better hower. Get a couple of tracks of a formula 1 engine and crank it as you accellerate...

Dry ICE
Since we are on the topic of Cooler airflow. I actually saw a guy who had an old CUDA who put a dry ice container under the hood. He routed his fuel line to go around it in coils to cool the fuel and then he routed his air flow through this container. When ever he wanted to race, he would just drop a few blocks of ice in and "Voila".
Do you think DINAN will have something like that soon??

Some years ago, I visisted Ferrari in Maranello, in a shop I bought a CD with "Symphony of pipes" with tracks like "Flat out on Mulsane", "Michael Shumacher praticing in Ferrari F1", etc. You get the picture?
Whenver we stopped at a traffic light, my travel companion loved to turn the volume up real loud and roll the windows down........
People around the car would first look very suprised, then smile and then start to laugh!
Cheers,
/Johan

Hello Greg,

If the engine is a four-stroke it would eat about 5L * 6000rpm * 1/4 = 125L/s.
(You divided by two, when you should have divided by four, if I am not mistaken. The strokes are intake, compress, expand, exhaust, and only the first stroke moves air through the box.)
The next question is how hot to make the airbox. At first I looked on a bottle of Prestone, and guessed 250F (around the temperature antifreeze will boil over), but then I concluded that the temperature should be hotter---after all, the exhaust manifold is making this heat, and it is right under the airbox (?), so why not guess 350F? The real solution is to put a thermocouple inside your airbox and see what the temperature is. (Sadly, as you may know, I don't have my M5 yet, so I cannot measure the temperature.)
I would not be at all surprised if the result turns out to be the same as before (i.e., insulation is worthless), but can you give the numbers one more run?

You're right: The active noise cancellation would kill the stock car's lame sounds, and then the awesome sounds can be added on top.
Imagine how various people would want to make their cars sound like a Harley, etc.
