          Nav computer dying?

For no apparent reason, my Mk IV nav system suddenly could not read my map disk this morning. Worked fine last Sunday when I drove the car last but this morning the display said it could not read the CD/DVD. This is with an OEM Navteq 2004.2 DVD. I was running v27 firmware that I upgraded several months ago.

I was able to install v25 firmware and successfully read the map disk. And then re-upgraded to v27 and everything seems to be ok.

I notice one small difference now however. The scale is showing up in yards vs. feet.

          So, I have some questions:

          1. Has anyone had a similar experience when all of the sudden the nav system can't read a DVD?

          2. Is the switch to yards for scale the result of the downgrade/upgrade of firmware? Is it reversible?

          3. Should I be concerned that the nav computer may be dying?

          Thanks.

Oh...the car is an '03, still under warranty.

          You switched into euro mode;

          - Yards vs feet (much more accurate measurement when you are moving)
          - No more accept screen

Euro mode is SO much better once you get used to it

The car is just getting back to its roots after forgetting all that NASTY usa programming that went into it.... The car was built with metric nuts and bolts, and it does feel better using its native toungue... you will find that it will probably accelerate faster, and return better fuel economy.

... and now back to reality...

I.T is not perfect and I think you have just experienced it first hand. Good to know its all okay now though. I would not suspect that its anything more than a glitch that you've worked out by reprogramming the unit. Could be the EEPROM in the unit beginning to fail, but with only one occurance its hard to know. If the occurance (or any other bizzare goings on) intensifies then it would point to a failing NAV unit but at this stage you should be fine.

Your dealer could recode the unit back to USA if you wish.

Thanks guys. So, yards is a euro thing, eh? The voice directions are still in the American female voice...not British.

I guess I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens.

          Thanks again!

There is a british voice hack, or you could get the UK high DVD (it would be useless) to get the voice
