Do you know if/how this 'reprogram' or 'updated software' will affect the car?

I wonder, if instead of the DME "fix" if I can get a Dinan upgrade?

This updated software will only allow aftermarket OBD2 scan tools to read faults in the DME.

If you have stock software then no affects will be felt.

If you have aftermarket software, well.. it will most likely be lost.

If the Dinan guys can get their software back at no charge, then that's a big plus for them.

No... unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

You will have to upgrade the DME first as per the recall then get the Dinan upgrade and pay for that. Dinan software upgrades uses a different computer. The DME updates uses the BMW diagnostic computer.

This is bad news for those of us with aftermarket software. We'll lose it if we comply, but won't pass smog if we don't. Someone please contact Powerchips and see what they will do?

Thanks Jon, you are always so helpful. I am fortunately so far out in the 'sticks' that we do not currently have emissions testing (probably coming in a couple of years). I will probably do nothing unless I have to go to the dealer for something else. What do you think?

Powerchips is well aware of the situation as they are reflashing a customers DME from an E46 M3.

I would get it done. It's free. You can wait and drink coffee, eat donuts, or chat with the hot receptionist at the front desk.

Wouldn't hurt to walk in the showroom either and check out the new BMW models.

THANKS, I am working with Leonora on getting my cluster replaced (pixels). Maybe I can make the trip worthwhile and finally get BMW to pay for most of the work!
