I really don't want to open up a huge oil discussion as I have read a lot of the threads. I want to get a few opinions on this question: My '01 has 82K miles, I know that spec is 5W30. In the summer months (90+ degrees) here in GA and based on 82K miles worth of wear, would it be advisable to use 10W40 to thicken it up a bit to help protect the engine or stick with the recommended.

If it were my car, I'd only put the 10W-60 in the car - I know that your current oil is the recommended but, from all that I've read on this board and with the few engine issues, the 10W-60 is simply a better oil.
It IS recommended for my car being a 11/99 build primarily because of a slightly different piston ring design.
The way I understand it, your oil is acceptable for your car but, the 10W-60 can be put in your car and again, it is simply a better oil.

Dealer has been putting in 10-60 for the last 3 years or so in my 02 that I have 50,000 miles on it. The spec changed to the heavier weight. Lots of discussion on this previously. I too am in CA. Was going through about a quart in 1,500 miles, now it seems maybe every 3000.

My only concern with the heavier weight oil was that the tolerances might be so 'tight' that it would not adequately lubricate the engine. I was thinking that after all of the miles (wear) it might be OK to thicken it up. If dealer has been putting it in your '02 for the past 3 years that should answer my question!

I live in FL, and have been using 10-60 w/o issues. 1qt every 4-4500 miles
there is really no benifit to 10.40 in the s62. If you do virgin oil analyses on these, you will find that hot, bmw longlife synthetic 5w30 is quite thick, "more like a 40wt" i keep reading. So hot, there is no significant difference. COLD, when it's really important, 10w40 will be thicker than 5w30 (though similar to 10w60), so it will not flow as quickly, so that's a count against 10w40. If you feel bmw 5/30 is too thin, i'd go with TWS. Another "approved" option is mobil 1 0w40, or "german castrol" syntec 0w30.

mobil1 0w40 is the way to go for me !, 2003 s62 v8 and dosnt use any oil
within 4000 miles!
even the inside of my tailpipes are still shiny!, i always use either
mobil 1 0w40 or castrol edge 0w40 , castrol rs 0w40 , shell helix 5w40 but never 10w60 ,
bmw uk insisted my dealer change my oil free of charge after filling it with 10w60,so hey there must be some issue with it in the newer engine.
