Instructions/help for changing value cover gaskets

My valve cover gaskets are leaking and need to be changed again. I had them changed at the dealer, and they actually made it worst. So, instead of taking it back and taking more chances with the dealer, I'd like to learn how to do it myself.

Can someone start me off by pointing me to the best source of instructions for these types of repair jobs? Better yet, maybe a Bay Area mechanic can teach a few of use who have the same problem (for a price)?

Can someone confirm that the valve covers can't even be tightened to temporarily stop the oil without removing parts?

the gaskets get hard after a few years of heat. Installing them is pretty much the same on all bmw valve covers, here is a write up on a 540i,
