Griot Garage's Hand Pump Oil/Liquid Extractor

Hi all,

Perusing through the new catalog and came upon this product. The website actually says that this method extracts more oil than draining.

http://www.griotsgarage.com/search.j...text=hand+pump

Does anybody have any experience with this? Anyone tried it with the beast?

Thanks,
MCG

I use something similar and I wouldn't go back to draining oil the old-fashioned way. You'll wonder why you didn't get one sooner.

Hey, now that I look at the Griot's version it's identical to mine. Highly recommended!

Have used the Griot's evacuator for years. Works great on the M5 but not as well on other cars (my e30 M3). I had a cheaper model from BMP but this one was nearly useless as the metal container made it impossible to tell if the collecter tank was full vs not working or working fine. The Griot's model is about a quart shy on capacity; you have to dump a little and then reattach the tubing, but this is a minor inconvenience. A theoretical problem with top side evacuators is that they leave debris in the bottom of the oil pain. I have my local independent BMW mechanic do the inspections and therefore the oil gets drained conventionally every 30k miles. I do my own oil changes every 7500 miles. 106k miles to date.

Thanks for the info.

BKH, have any of you encountered that problem with debris in the oil pan when using these kind of pumps?

M5Joe, has your dealer noticed the presence of debris when in for a regular oil change?

Check out the Mityvac 7400. Tooltopia.com has it for $45., $7 shipping. Holds a little over 7 liters.

No, never. What kind of debris could there be? If you change your oil when it's warm the contaminants that are not captured by the filter are held in suspension and sucked out. IMO these pumps are the only way to go.

Counterpoint: Not all contaminants are held in suspension - heavy ones settle out and stay at the lowest point, near the drain plug. The BMW is the easiest oil change of any car I've ever owned. I'll stick to the drain plug.
