what do you think of the new 7 web site?
last april, bmw of north america engaged enockinteractive, (ei), to design a web site for bmw's new e65 7 series, a major new introduction to the luxury car class. the purpose of the site is to generate excitement in anticipation of the car's launch in January, 2001. the site gives pre-qualified individuals the inside scoop on the car and all its exciting new features. it is a dynamically generated site that includes rich flash experiences, pda content and a high degree of personalization. every two weeks a new chapter is added to the site and site users receive e-mail notification of the recent updates. the site has received praise for its usability and friendliness. we believe the site is exciting, inviting and most importantly, captures the essence of the new 7. the first stage of the site was launched in july. by september (to coincide with the frankfort auto show) all of the content will have been plugged in. by then all the news will be out and buyers, owners, new customers, etc., will be able to view the site in its entirety to learn everything available about the new 7.
the site is quite good and in the opinion of some, perhaps the best bmw site yet. however, we are talking to ourselves here.what we really need to know is what the audience has to say.
i value the opinions that are shared here and would appreciate hearing what you think about the site. not the car mind you, just the site. no holds barred, totally candid opinions. you guys are never short of opinions which is one reason why the message board is so vital.
here is the url... bmwusa.com/thenew7. you have to register to get in.
ei needs to check its assumptions. for example, is the site informative, fresh, exciting, engaging, appropriate. fyi: ei is responsible for all concepts, design and flash movies. data-base integration, scripting and html is being provided by a company in texas, the text is generated by another company bmw works with.
you can either post your opinion or e-mail me...david@enock.com
i am looking forward to this (i think).
p.s. i wonder... does this call for crisp new dollar bills?

I just got my mail today about the site. It's great, easy to use, and lessened my hatred towards the new 7 (amazing feat).
Nice to hear you web guys are interested in our opinion. To bad the [car] design team isn't.....

I got my id number by email and snail mail. All attempts to log on failed.... I use netscape 4.73. Your site it is not user friendly for those of us who don't like to read instructions. And if you continue to use passwords for your communications you will have continued success without my help because I can't be bothered. Straight from the hip as you asked.
BTW, I'm a committed (or should be committed) BMW owner having had nine of them.
Lighten up with the complications. Everybody that cares about the 7 already has seen it

Why would I want to go through all of that rig-a-ma-roll to look at a website that is going to have it's content dribbled out over the next two months when I can wait two months or so and see it all when you move it to the main bmwusa.com site?
Nothing personal mind you, I'm sure you did a bang-up job on that site. It's just a matter of that type of marketing approach not appealling to me.

I like the overall feel & design
When I first used it I thought It was very slick. Typical BMW techno wiz. What immediately came to mind is, why no video? A potential buyer for this car most likely has broadband internet access.
However the site has not softened my view toward the car's design

I have enjoyed the first two chapters. Your company has done an excellent job of blending the new 7 into a story. I just wished that I could have been one of the lucky 250 who received the free Compaq iPaq preloaded with 7 series info. That was a great marketing idea.

David, I have to say it is a great site in terms of design and aesthetics! I did have a little problem downloading the WMP version of the "Performance" video, but the realmedia version worked fine. It's a great site, I just wish BMW had decided to come out with more information at one time. You must have had the full scoop on everything when we were discussing spy pics and such!

David,
Nice work on the site! It came out really nice. However, I think you'll find that the non-web savvy might have a tough time navigating the system. For example, I felt the up and down arrows were just a bit too small, and maybe they could have been placed above and below (respectively) the text. I'd also like to see a permanent menu system that is always available when you are on any page. You did that with the "7" in the upper left hand corner, but I don't know whether people will realize that this is the the way to get back to the home page.
Maybe a better idea is to have a little intro shockwave movie explaining the sites features???
Regardless, excellent job, I was very pleased with the site and enjoyed visiting it. Let's hope we get more enthusiastic about the new 7
-Chris

you guys are great. the criticisms are right on (the praise too, if i may say so). i would like to wait a while before asking some people at ei to jump in with more of the inside scoop, i.e., yes, we knew about the new 7 while board members wer posting spy pics and offering their thoughts on design. however, we were sworn to confidentiallity. that's why i did not participate in those threads. though, ei did learn some things from the site that even the persons we work with at bmwna did not know at the time. there are lots of things that i believe you will find interesting and will address both the criricism and the praise.
for now, i am going for a long, screaming drive in the beast!!!!!!!!
