I officially passed on my option for an early October production 2002 M5 today. Why? No major changes to get me out of my 2001. The in-dash CD, Bi-xenons and two new colors are not enough to persuade me. I figured we saw the last major cosmetic upgrade in the 2001 model year and I doubt any performance or significant engine changes will be made to the S62 for this model. I would speculate the E39 M5 will live out its life virtually unchanged from now until the last unit rolls off the line. I took delivery of this '01 last October and the ticker is only at 6700 miles, this baby is not even broken in! I remember that my '00 M5 really started feeling faster at around 10k.
In semi-related news, I got the 8/01 Roundel today and in the "Heard on the Strasse" section it reads:

New 5 breaks with tradition
The E60 5 series, due for launch at the 2003 Frankfurt auto show, will be a major departure from traditional BMW design. Insiders describe the sedan as "slab-sided" with three round lamps under plastic covers arranged on an angle on each side, as opposed to two horizontal pairs that date back to the 5er's first generation in the mid-'70s--lights apparently being the latest design fad. Also tipped is a six-speed Selectronic transmission that debuts in the E65 7 Series next month.

Let's hope it's not close to that hideous rust-colored car that showed up a few months back with the snow plow rear end!
