The most popular choices seem to be, in order:
1. Michelin Pilot Sport 2
2. Goodyear F1 GSD3
3. Bridgestone S03
4. Continental SportContact2, P Zero Nero, Pilot Sports, Toyos, others
A search will reveal lots of info on these.

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."
If you search some previous posts, the Michelin PS2's are mostly backordered at most shops, and aren't being produced anymore. There are are few that are "MO" coded which were specific to Merc's, but they appear to have a different thickness than the standard PS2's and at least one owner experienced some rubbing issues and couldn't install them.

I have the KDW2 on my old 850R wagon...they are nice tires. They aren't quite at the same performance level of the PS2 but are very close. They feel real nice around limit of adhesion with excellent controllability. I took the car out for a "fun run" at the end of an autocross last fall, and I was blown away by how much total stick these tires had -- I was just coming off of running the M5 with R-compounds, so my expectation level of the KDW2 was low, but far exceeded what I expected. I think I'm probably going with them on my ZHP in place of the Toyo T1-R on it now (which I will never buy again).

when it come sto khumos i make the following analogy:
a kumho is to a honda civic in the sam fashion as a PS2/GDS3 is to an m5...
i would say that if you never drive aggressively it is probably a good tire. if u do, then i would not get it personally...
edit: after doing a bunch of research i personally went with the good year eagle 1 gds3 tires. so far i am happy. i was also very happy with the pilot sports before

I put the 19" Goodyear F1 GSD3's on my M5 9,000 miles ago and they only show 15% wear.
I don't track the car, but it does see some aggressive mountain road driving.
I would stick with Goodyear or Michelin for the M5.
Don't shortchange yourself for the performance and safety a better tire gives.
Just my 2 cents......

There seems to be a bias on this board in favor of paying more just for the sake of paying more, or toward certain brands. Kumho make a fine tire it is not a PS2 but considering most people drive thier m5's no harder than 5 or 6/10ths ever why shell out the extra money for a tire that in some cases is no better and in some others is marginally better?
Also for the record in Solo-2 and must club racing outside of Hossier- Kumho, toyo, and Falken make some of the most widely used and victorious tires.
But hey thats only my opinion, and if you go by who buys what and in what volumes the PS2 is nbo question the way to go, I hower will be buying crappy tires for my m5 when the current ones wear out, since all I care about is absolute grip and that the tire last 1OK miles.
