There was a used M5 mirror (oval with red security light and a rain sensor) on eBay last week, for around $200 iirc.
If you aren't in an extreme hurry, keep your eyes on eBay and be opportunistic.

But the usual eBay caution applies. Be sure the seller has a very good rep, or you might find yourself with a perfectly good looking oval mirror that still doesn't dim at night. Sure wish I knew what was causing these failures and whether they are fixable. I'm guessing not. I'm getting tired of being blinded at night from traffic headlights from the rear, but not really wanting to part with $700 for a new mirror.

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

Like the pixel problem in the IC, it appears to be a design defect. Since the car is out of production, unlikely it is going to be addressed.
The non oval 5 series mirror also works, and since it is not an M specific part, it may be cheaper. I had a choice when mine went (squeezed in under warranty) and I chose rectangular because it gives a better viewing area. No issues so far.

Jerry

I found a rectangular mirror on ebay for around $70. Just do a search for "M5, MIrror". It was an exact fit for the M5. As Jerry said, the view is better than the oval mirror. Nobody but an anal purist would know the difference.
The Beastpower Lidatek/V1 mirror would be a sweet replacement except for the price.

Nice, but everyone behind you sees the V1 go off. Better off with Stealthone IMHO.

Depends how fast you're going :p

neither are rain sensor 'housing' compatible, but both can likely be modded to do so. If you own a 2000, without rain sensor, or can do the mod work, the price will certianly be right. I'd expect, from these prices, that the proper one can be found for under $200.
