Questions / Opinions on a 2000 M5 w/ 10K miles / $35K

I'm a first time potential M5 buyer and anxious to join the club. I have an opportunity to buy a like brand new 2000 Anthracite w/ Caramel Nappa leather, folding rear seat and PDC with only 10,000 miles on it for $35K. The car is for sale from a Ford/Lincoln dealer and was traded by the original senior owner for a Linclon Navigator. I spoke to the orignal owner and local BMW dealer where he bought it from, and the car checks out perfectly. He changed the oil every year regardless of the low miles and replaced the battery this year. The build date is 1/00. The vehicle does not have any extended warranties and looks and runs like brand new.

Your thoughts ? I'll drive it about 10,000 miles per year. Although the miles are very low, I am concerend that the car is now 6 years old. Any suggestions on buying an aftermarket warranty ? Should I be concerned about the early 2000 Piston Ring issue that I read about on this forum ? Did the 2000 M5's come with all eight Navigation disks ? There is only one disk with the car, Disk #6 for New England and it doesn't cover my location. I discovered that Navtech has the complete NAmerica 2006 CD set for $149 through June 30. If I get the car, I'll most likely order new disks.

Thanks for your responses, GPZ1

Sounds like a nice low mileage car! I had a 2000 and it was great until 50,000 plus. Clutch (weak system), A/C controller, new injectors, onboard computer control panel.

I had 103k when I sold it. Low mileage is nice...you can avoid these problems until later, or heavy use. Don't know how the dreaded carbon fouling would come into play!!

This sounds like one sweet car. The color and interior, in my opinion, is truly special. It's not a give away price but in this condition is shouldn't be.
Finding a reliable after market warranty will be challenging but I think would be worth pursuing for peace of mind. Converting the nav system to the 16/9 format and replacing with a DVD should be investigated although I don't use the nav as much as I thought I would.
Again, I think you've found something special and I wouldn't let it get away.
Keep us posted...and good luck!

i wouldn't worry about the early ring design. Just keep in mind that you may use more oil, and need to use the more expensive TWS.

Man, at 10k, that engine is possibly not even fully broken in! A warranty would be nice though.

Sounds like a great find to me. Great color combo.

FYI. Read this site:

http://www.extended-warranty.info/autowarranty/

I purchased mine from:

www.AAAutoWarranty.com

I've had one claim so far. The only negative is the dealer must call first to get the work OK'd and there may be some discussion on how to repair.

Other than that, it's been fine.

Was the early VANOS fix done to this car???

I'd prefer a later model, even with 10, 20k more miles- but that is a personal call.

I would be concerned that the prior owner might not have wrung it out enough to find all issues under warranty.

Be very careful about buying aftermarket warranties from the dealers...

Don't bother with nav discs. You need to upgrade the GPS system... Mark 4 for $800, widescreen for $xx, you can find a DVD image and burn your own.
