          Offset short shift handle?

          Hey guys,

Does anyone know of a offset short shift handle? The M5 shifter is to far off center for my tastes. I would like to have the shifter closer to my leg by about 2".

If there isn't one available I may have to have one custom made.

          Thanks in advance.

Emphasis on "a little" as more than a little will melt the plastic and rubber bits......

Make sure it is properly lined up. This is the first time I have heard that complaint. Given its extra long height, it should be easy to reach.

          Gsfent,

It's not the reach that I have a problem with. I am 6'2" and reach the stick fine. But in every other sports car I have owned the stick was more in line with my shoulder. I feel like when I am running through the gears the shifter is over farther than it should be to start.

Maybe it's just me. I just personally feel like if I were to build the ergonomics of the vehicle I would have put the shifter closer to my leg.

Maybe I am just goofy, if no one has expressed this before it's probably just me but the 911 and the Noble shifters were closer to my leg and more in-line with my shoulder than the M5. It's not a bad thing, I just want to tailor the car better to fit me, that's all.

Hey, no problem big guy, get it set up the way you like it!! Just commenting I hadn't heard of that complaint before. Like you, I have driven all types of German cars, and I find most of them have good ergonomics for the shifters. Never drove a Noble, favorite was my 944T. My complaint with the M5 was the longish gate, as well as a shifter that was too tall. Took care of both of those items.

If you are near me and want to see if yours is lined up correctly, just drop by. If not, as suggested, remove the shifter, have it bent a little (depending on how low the bend point is; the lower the point, the more change at the top) and see if you like it. If not, you can always buy a replacement stock shifter for next to nothing from people who have done the SSK upgrade, probably easier and cheaper than paying to have it straightened.
          Regards,
          Jerry

          Jerry,

Hey thanks for the offer. I wish I was close I would take you up on the offer. I am over in St. Pete. Glad we missed Alberto

Like I said before, maybe it's just me. It just seems like the shifter is too far over to the right by about 2" max. It's not much but I find myself wishing the shifter was closer to my right knee.

I grew up on Volkswagen. I had a 84 GTI (great car) and then a Scirocco 16V, both cars for about 4 years each. I remember the shifters being closer to my leg in both cars. It was just more of a straight shot and felt like I had more control because it wasn't on an angle. Granted, those were really small cars compared to the 5 consiquently the positioning of the shifter may have been simply by the physical limitations of them. Nonetheless, even the 911 and the Noble (don't own a Noble, friend does) are more of a straight shot. Again, much smaller cars.

It's a small thing but we are so anal about the setup and driving experience of our cars it's something that is important enough for me to do something about. But first I have to decide on which short shift kit I am going to go with
