Over the years, I've experienced wildly different interpretations of issues from two different main dealers. I routinely consult two shops if there is any doubt about what the issue is. Proceed only when you feel satisfied you have a reasonable understanding.
Thanks Jeff Adam and Dave. I am calling Joe over at the M shop he seems to understand this from both sides because he used to work for a dealership. My feeling is that they either cut a deal with the insurence company to get me outof their hair before this got legal becuse I was bieng jerked around to much or they had a very incompetent mechanic check the car the first time. Either way does not look good on their part. I am asuming that two new valves at no cost to me will not be a bad thing so I have it checked out after their repairs are done. brian
The big thing that concerns me, is first they tell you it's "rings" now they tell you it's "valves"....and they charged your $690 for a leak down test!!
So first they overcharged you for a leakdown, then they offer the most expensive solution (new motor), now they just try to do a lower cost solution to fix it.
So why are the valves bad? High oil consumption caused by valves would normally be valve guides. Or did u bend the valves. They should be able to tell with leakdown test if it it is valves or rings.
I would also call up AVUS for a 3rd opinion.

Sorry to be blunt, but now- when the engine is open- is the time to get it looked at!
You can lead a horse to water I guess....
Agreed. If the diagnosis is correct, you want to know why. And now is the time to consider refreshing the other valves, as well as porting the head ( hey, I assume they have to pull the head; if so, it is already off the car). I would be very skeptical.
Reards,
Jerry

the purpose of the leakdown test is to determine the cause of low compression. I do not understand how they could actually do the test, say it is rings, but now say it's valves. Additionally, i do not see 6 hours of labor to get a head off and replace two valves. I would be wanting more info as well. Has the car been in for repairs to the vanos unit lately. It is not unheard of for a sloppy tech to not set up the vanos unit correctly (valve timing) and the result is piston to valve contact.

Something smells funny and it might not be the rings!
I have been down this painful and costly road. Like everyone seems to be saying, the leakdown tests gives you an indication of an issue, but not necessarily the reason for the issue. In fact, you probably do have bad rings, but why? Perhaps spun rod bearings? It would not be a first here.
Regarding six hours to fix this issue, I think not. Try at least double that or perhaps more. If they open up the engine and need to do other work....welll all bets are off. In fact, it would be wise to do other work once it is opened up anyway. Perhaps the rod bearings need to be replaced or even the main bearings while you are there. You might also need to have a look at the crankshaft. There is an expensive item to be replaced. Of course none of this includes replacing all of the fluids and seals.
My repair was over 40 hours of work! It adds up quickly.
