Does it look like this? This S62 has over 100k miles. Most techs would probably say that this is normal and looks fine for a high mileage motor. No issues due to carbon.
Dave
Yikes!
That's a lot'o'carbon build-up and one fugly piston crown.
I wonder if that much carbon affects the compression ratio of the cylinder?
Any pinging issues at all?
Salty.

Are you f**ing kidding me? What is your point? spit it out, are you saying people here are more "honest" than other places? Dude, you haven't been around much have you? This is a capitalism, money defines what values are. We consume more than 67% of the world's resources, just 250 Million people, and you are talking about values? I thought I put an end to this discussion, but guess not. Well, this is my last comment on this thread.
I am usually not one to jump in the middle of these discussions, but if you really believe that "money defines what values are" then you might want to look to another board for your resources. I have been here a while and by in large this is a very respectful place to cover many topics related to the M5. We do wonder off from time to time in other directions, but not too far.
I do not get the impression that money defines the majority or even the minority here. One does not need to have travelled to have good values.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the words of wisdom! I went into Santa Monica and spoke with the Service Manager-Keven. He was very nice and said he would see what he could do. I basically asked BMW to cover the cost of the engine tear down so we could see where we stand with the extended warranty company. I also spoke with Joe from The M shop very nice and knowledgable guys over there. I probably won't hear anything from BMW until next week but I will keep you posted. Some of you guys please have a great weekend drive for me... I will be on my bike
Thanks Brian
Hopefully it will not be too many weekends this way for you.

I was trying to say politely, I thought, that there are other viewpoints and ways of doing things. One is in not nessessarily better than the other. Not better-just different. Even that 'attempt' was apparently misunderstood.
Misunderstandings all around, I was trying to say. I'm starting to think I was wrong. (not really) I'll leave it at that.

Here are the valves from the same S62 w/ over 100k miles. Some carbon deposits are normal. Note the clean valve edges. This was characterized as perfect and exemplifying a well-maintained engine.
ok. Tha's what it looks like in my engine. So my natural paranoia is working well, but the reasons behind it were not sound..or..to give myself a break..not fully fleshed out - Missing information. Ie, unknowns. My engine is potentially..just fine.
I think I'll go beat on it now.
Edit: Is it possible to get rid of all that stuff.... or is it not worth the effort?

I use about 2 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. I also have the carbon build up problem, and last time I took my car into the dealership, they said I had some cylinder issues. I'm curious to know what progress you make with your warranty co. Keep us posted!

See also Mike's thread ("Rebuilt engine") for more info. Sounds like you two have the same problem.
