Al-Afghani,

That is a very rude comment. This is a brotherhood of M5 owners and certainly that attitude is way out of line on this forum. Please refrain from making those statements. M5 owners look out for one another.

Sorry but I forgot to mention this engine had less than 10k and was a 2002 model year. I know its sorta hard to tell just by the pictures but the technician that pulled off the head and the shop foreman said that it had way too much carbon on top of the pistons.

Here's a picture of my damaged pistons at 80k miles on an E36 M3. This had a lot less carbon than the previous pics I posted.

Been here done this

Brian,

I think we discussed this subject via pm's, but I would still try to go through BMW first. You may not have carbon build up as the issue at all, it could in fact be spun bearings that caused the rings to fail that would give you blow-by and thus failing the leak down test/poor compression.

Open the engine up and find out at the dealer if BMWNA will help out at all. Otherwise have the dealer take it apart and if BMWNA is unwilling to help, box it all up and tow it to good independent.

If I had to do it all over again and BMWNA had not helped out, I would have done this. In fact, I am so concerned with my oil consumption after the repair that I an having it tested to find out if the repairs are not as they should be.

Good luck and I hope you get through quicker than I did.

Mark

and why would I do that? Most dealers who buy such a car will fix it under warranty etc...one engine dead, no need to lose a life

You may get the car repaired by the dealer and it may in fact be under warranty, but that does not mean you would want to keep it after that kind of extensive repair.

I have been driving my car a little more now Mark and have noticed that it seems to be using more oil now than before the similar engine work that we both had done.

This piston ring thing has me asking some questions - my tech said that when he looked/tested my rings said they were good and said even if they weren't that I couldn't replace just the rings because they were specific to the pistons.

I don't know about that - all I know is that the car seems to be using more oil than before - nothing real alarming - about a quart every 1500 miles but again, more than before.

Maybe because our cars now are going through the break-in period again but, it's been well over the 1200 mile mark since the work has been done.

I'm thinking about a leak-down test myself.

Well I wish mine was only using that much oil. In the 1st 1200 miles it used a quart and a half. Either that or the dealer did not fill it up all the way. I changed the oil at 1200miles and it was darker than I have ever seen it at 7500 miles.

I am taking it to an independent for a good once over. If there is still a problem, back to the dealer it goes, because we do have a two year warranty on the work done.

Does your seem to run a bit rougher than before the repair?

Mark

I think it´s your attitude of unloading your crap onto someone else is bothering people.

It has nothing to do with understanding I think - it´s more about being honest.

Like I stated, you can see it that way, but me from attending hundreds of car auctions see it differently. BMW repairs their stuff under warranty, and dealers usually have cheap labor and buy these things cheap. So our friend here may lose 4-5K on the car from the original value, and the dealer guy may only spend a few K fixing it and then another few K in profit. Everyone benefits.

Excuse the attitude, I should have clarified further.
