Bad fuel tank vent valve and new tranny

Got my first SES light at 23k and it appears that it is a bad fuel tank vent valve? Seen a couple of posts about it on here but I was wondering if that could explain why it seems as though sometimes the car is a rocket while at other times its just fast? Could be my imagination or more likely the weather?

I am also getting a new transmission..under warranty! Oh yeh! I purchased the car a few months ago with 18.5k on the clock and I noticed the very next morning that the gears were very notchy. I hadn't really noticed when I drove the car because it was warmed up and the weather was warmer. But driving after 500 miles and letting it sit over night in 20 degree F weather it was definitely not as smooth as one would expect. I mentioned it almost immediately to my local service guy and he was nice enough to let the master mechanic look at it and he said he thought it was basically normal as most M5 trannys seem notchy to him?

So a month or so went by and I brought the car back in for a 4 wheel alignment and some new front tires and mentioned to him again that the tranny was rough. Ended up getting a new clutch and flywheel which was a surprise. Didn't really help the roughness at all but man I had no idea that my clutch was even slipping. I couldn't even turn DSC off without spinning out for a few dozen miles until I got used to it. Much more grip. Can you grab a 4th? Hell yeh!

Anyway when I took the car back for the SES I mentioned again that the tranny just felt bad and it was still hard to even get it in gear at times. So I took the mechanic for a spin and of course it was smooth. Then on the last two turns coming back to the shop I had problems downshifting into second. They called an engineer? who is familiar with the case and it looks like I will be getting a new transmission!

To me it has seemed like the synchronizers weren't doing there job. I have driven standard transmissions since I was 12 and I have never driven a car that has felt so rough shifting. That includes an old Ford 2 ton dump bed.

Anyone else having issues with their transmission with low mileage? Not owning the car for very long I can't say how it has been treated but I am glad to see that BMW takes these things serious. I for one am a happy customer for sure! I only hope that if any VANOS or carbon issues are going to show up at all they show up soon. A warranty is a great thing to have!

The mileage on my beast is now at 116000km. I started noticing a little roughness in the tranny about a month ago. Following advise from this board I changed the tranny fluid, and definitely noticed an improvement. So much for "lifetime fluids"...

This board is great!!!

When I had the clutch done I had the fluid changed.. I reckon mine shifts worse now than it did before hand. When I take off I have to double clutch to get 2nd.

Once it warm though its fine
