So, I just installed my VW MAFs a couple days ago, and the car has been doing great since then...better power, more smooth, etc. Until yesterday when out of the blue my SES light came on. I got the Peake reader in the mail today so I checked it out and I have a TON of fault codes...Looking for advice from people that have any idea what this all means and what I should do...Thanks!
1. Timeout SMG-CAN --- DELETED
2. Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Correlation Cyl 5-8
3. Misfire During Warmup, Cyl 3
4. Misfire During Warmup, Cyl 5
5. Misfire During Warmup, Mult. Cyl.
6. Control Unit Self-Test, Safety Concept Master Check ---- DELETED
7. Air Fuel Adaption, Cyl 1-4
8. Air Fuel Adaption, Cyl 5-8
9. Misfire with Empty Fuel Tank
10. Engine Coolant Temp., Plausability ---- DELETED
EDIT---oops...read some of the B's as 6's...so delete the ones i wrote delete next to and add these:
11. Exhaust Camshaft position sensor, Cyl # 5-8
12. Catalyst System efficiency, Cyl #1-4
13. Catalyst System efficiency, Cyl #5-8
14. Exhaust camshaft VANOS position control, Cyl #1-4
Let me reiterate that I have felt nothing out of the ordinary after the switch to the VW MAFS, just this SES light (delayed). I've only had the beast for a few weeks so this is the first SES light that I've gotten. Advice???

Reset the SES light with the Peake reader and see what comes back. I would be looking for possibly a bad CPS. If so, not a big deal.
Regards,
Jerry

I was running on fumes once in my 540 and had these same errors. I'd assume something similar caused these.
From reading here, it seems bad MAFs mask bad O2 Sensors, so when you replace the MAFs they cause the O2 sensors to work harder and if they are bad, cause faults.
As for the CPS... usually you're driving down the road and BAM it feels like you have no power and the gas pedal doesn't do anything (that was my experience at least) so it could be bad. Again, on my 540, it was only a $60 part, but when they go bad on the beast, I'm sure they will be more.

Codes are stored until reset. THese may be a year old. Your SES might have been set by something relatively benign, but now that you pulled them you see all of them. The dealer's computer will pull code AND mileage at which it last occured.
I agree- reset and monitor. Pull codes anytime you want, light or not.
I've (almost) run out of gas... many of the misfires are from that IMHO. Might even trip others?
Anyway, report back....
CPS can start flaking out and still not have the total power loss that is usual, good news is that it will eventually fully fail and give you that "half horsepower" feel.
The whole top of the engine gets heat damaged by lean burn caused by bad MAF's.
The plugs get burnt.
You put in new MAF's.
Mixture ratio richens considerably.
This swamps out the plugs--which were on the absolute verge of failure. Now their poor state is amply illustrated.
You also get 'bad catalyst' warnings, from the plugs being swamped and the fuel/air ratio being so different-due to the new MAF's.
Replace the plugs, and the rest of the SES warnings should go away over time.
But get those new spark plugs in that car.
The only potential 'real' codes..are the CPS codes, but they may go away as well!
What pisses me off..is the dealers use this as a money making machine..and take care of everything on the list..at GREAT and HUGE expense to BMW, or the owner of the car..when it's actually a pair of $59.99 sensors. Almost every frikin' time.
They'd replace both CPS sensors, all four o2 sensors, the cat coverters and suddenly...maybe...you might somehow need a Vanos job too??
$15,000 dollars later....
...well..either you dump the car into their waiting arms, or dump it on the open market.... or you come here and find out the REAL deal.

I agree with the other posters, suspect the CPS's first. On mine, the driver's side intake and exhaust CPS's turned out to be the culprits, but when I got them I found them to be a different design so I went ahead and did the passenger's side too.
No more codes and it's been months.
Changed the plugs too at the time. Well worth it, she accelerates like ripping silk now.
